The Furious Five may not play a major role in this movie, but they do have their time to stand out. How significant was it for you to introduce fresh elements in this story while also connecting to the previous three films?

We inherited a fantastic cast, including James Hong, Bryan Cranston, Jack Black, and Dustin Hoffman. It was already packed with talented individuals, along with the Furious Five.

We aimed to take the audience out of the Valley of Peace and into Juniper City, a bustling metropolis filled with animals. Picture New York Times Square in ancient fantasy China. Our goal was to introduce a host of new characters while maintaining a balance between the familiar and the exciting. We wanted to give the audience what they were familiar with while also adding a fresh new twist with funny, entertaining characters.

Awkwafina brought so much to the table in the movie. Mike Mitchell, the director, was impressed by her humor and chemistry with Jack Black. They were already friends, which made their on-screen dynamic even more natural and fun. Mitchell knew right away that working with Awkwafina was a great decision. It's not easy to match Jack Black's comedic talent, but Awkwafina held her own and had a great time filming with him.

Creating Kung Fu Panda 4: Overcoming Pressure and Delivering Excellence

Mike Mitchell shared that the team felt some hesitation before creating the next installment of the beloved franchise. So the only thing we were uncertain about was ensuring that we had that, and on top of that, we wanted to introduce an amazing villain. It was a challenging task, as this franchise is known for having the best villains of all time. However, once we settled on a fantastic story with an exceptional villain and an exciting adventure, everything else fell into place. I was fortunate to inherit a talented cast. Everyone was eager to be part of Kung Fu Panda, including the cast members I had not yet secured. Additionally, we had a team of skilled artists. In my opinion, DreamWorks boasts the most talented animators and designers out of all the studios I have worked with.

Let's shift our focus to the animation aspect, particularly the different styles used for key moments. How did you come to make that decision?

Mike Mitchell believes that storytelling is key. He considers what each moment in the movie needs, adjusting the tone accordingly. Whether it's a heartfelt scene or a funny tavern brawl, the animators bring the characters to life with passion and creativity.

One interesting aspect of the process was the collaboration between experienced animators who had worked on previous films in the series and younger artists who were fans of Kung Fu Panda since childhood. Oftentimes, people who are known for being funny and comedic also excel in serious acting roles, like the incredibly talented Jack Black. Is there anything this guy can't do?

He even has the ability to sing Britney Spears songs flawlessly.

He's been chosen by fate to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace. The only issue is, Po doesn't know the first thing about spiritual leadership, and he also needs to find and train a new Dragon Warrior before he can start his new job.

Even more alarming, a powerful sorceress named Chameleon (played by Oscar® winner Viola Davis) has been spotted recently. Chameleon is a small lizard with the ability to transform into any creature, big or small. She has her sights set on Po's Staff of Wisdom, which could allow her to bring back all the villains Po has defeated to the spirit realm. Knowing he can't face this threat alone, Po seeks help from the crafty thief Zhen (portrayed by Golden Globe winner Awkwafina), a quick-witted corsac fox who may annoy Po but whose talents will be crucial in the upcoming battle.

As they team up to protect the Valley of Peace from Chameleon's grasp, this unlikely duo must learn to work together. Along the way, Po will realize that heroes can come from unexpected places.
