Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Gears and Gambits - Cosmo Canyon Protorelic guide
Let's dive into the mechanics of the Gears and Gambits minigame in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's Cosmo Canyon Protorelic quests without giving away any spoilers about the narrative arc or backstory.
Once you finish the Cosmo Canyon arc in Chapter 10: Watcher of the Vale, you can try these objectives. This is when Chadley introduces you to the first Protorelic site.
At the site, one of Chadley's robots or drones will approach a device. In the minigame that follows, you can select specific "gambits" for your drones. These determine how your units will behave automatically, like when the robot detects an enemy vulnerable to a particular element.
Robots are capable of performing actions, such as shooting at an enemy using a specific attack. They also come equipped with self-targeting systems. For example, you can choose to have the robot use an action like "cast Cure" when its health falls below 50%.
The main goal is to defeat the King Flan in the center of the arena, while also protecting your towers from destruction (more on these mechanics in a while).
Watch out for the King Flan's nasty counters.

Cosmo Canyon Protorelic challenge locations
If you're looking for the best options for Gears and Gambits in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, check out the locations of the Cosmo Canyon challenges below. We've numbered them based on the order that you visit these places. Don't forget to glide toward some areas using the Teal Chocobo!
In the first Gears and Gambits match in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the options are quite limited. However, as you progress, you will have more settings that you can customize. For our match, we chose the following setting:
Robot 1: Opponent: Blizzard Shot
Foe: Shock+
Self: Nullemental Field
Robot 2:Self: Haste Field+
Foe: Fire Shot
Foe: Gravity Shot
Self: Modify HP & Cost - Cost -40; HP -200
Self: Modify HP & Cost - HP +150
Robot 3Self: Augmentation+
Foe: Thunder
Foe: Missile
Self: Modify HP & Cost - Cost -20
Self: HP <50% - Cure Shot
In later challenges, you will have access to all these options. Don't worry if you don't see them in earlier matches. The main idea is to concentrate on the robots that cause fire and thunder damage once specific upgrades or conditions are met.
This setup made this minigame a lot more manageable.

Advancing along the arena and defeating enemies
Gears and Gambits features three portals for spawning your drones: left, middle, and right. The drones you can spawn depend on their cost and the points you've collected, shown in the lower-left corner of the screen.
Your drones will move towards the center from their designated portals. On the other hand, enemy mobs will spawn and move towards the nearest portal. These foes will attempt to reach your portals in order to cause damage, highlighting the importance of eliminating them with your drones.
In the previous example, Robot #2 has "Foe: Fire Shot" and "Foe: Gravity Shot." This means:
It will first shoot an enemy with Fire Shot, expending its limited elemental ammo each time.
When it has no more ammo, it will use Gravity Shot instead.
Once cost/HP modifications are unlocked in later matches, you can lower a robot's cost.
Basically, our "Fire Robots" and "Thunder Robots" tend to be cheaper so we can spawn more of them to counter enemy advances.
Use support spells to mitigate the damage dealt by the King Flan.

Best Portal Skills to use
As for Portal Skills, you can choose from three combinations, though we suggest using Option #3: Defensive Loadout. It grants:
Regenga - Restores some HP instantly, then more over time.
Enhancing attack power and damage, Cautious Courage is a beneficial skill to have in battles.
It's important to note that Portal Skills are specific to the portal's side they are used on. This means that the spells will only impact the robots within that particular section. For example, if we use Regenga to heal robots on the left side, it will not affect those in the middle or right sectors.
Tips for defeating the King Flan
To defeat the King Flan in the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Gears and Gambits minigame, your main goal is to take out the King Flan in the center of the chamber. This boss can be tricky to defeat because it has its own counters and triggers. Here are some tips to help you defeat the King Flan:
If you press the Square button, you can use Assess on the King Flan to see how it reacts and what triggers its actions.
When there are four robots on the same side, the King Flan will likely cast Barrier to boost its defense.
When five or more robots are focusing on the slime (meaning other slimes have been defeated or are not being targeted), it will perform a jumping attack that affects a wider area. Additionally, the slime can change its elemental attacks and vulnerabilities once it reaches specific HP thresholds.
It's all about overwhelming the King Flan with sheer numbers. Make sure you always have units attacking it, even if other bots are bogged down while dealing with minions.
The key to defeating King Flan is to overwhelm it with a large number of units. Always make sure to have units attacking it, even if some bots are busy with minions. Our strategy focused on using a "spammy" approach. By reducing the spawn cost of robots, we could deploy Fire Robots and Thunder Robots more frequently, especially against slimes weak to these elements. In some matches, King Flan switched weaknesses at 50% HP, allowing us to quickly defeat it with our units already in play. With the help of Regenga and Cautious Courage spells, our robots were able to survive longer than expected.
That's all for our Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Cosmo Canyon Protorelic and Gears and Gambits guide. Completing all the tasks will unlock hard mode, where the King Flan and its minions will challenge your skills. For more information on other World Intel activities, check out our Protorelics guide.
