What is 'The Dead Zone'?
The Dead Zone, based on King's 1979 novel of the same name, features Christopher Walken in the role of schoolteacher Johnny Smith. After being involved in a car accident, Smith falls into a coma. Upon awakening seven years later, he discovers that he has gained psychic abilities. These powers allow him to perceive an individual's past, present, and future upon contact. With this newfound gift, he strives to prevent disasters and murders in his community. However, his path takes a dangerous turn when he encounters Greg Stillson, a Presidential candidate, and foresees the destruction that Stillson's madness will bring upon humanity. Smith must confront a challenge when he realizes that there is a "dead zone" in his vision of the future, leaving him unable to perceive certain events. This revelation forces him to contemplate the extent of his willingness to change the future. Filmed in Toronto and its surroundings, the movie also features Brooke Adams, Tom Skerritt, Herbert Lom, and Anthony Zerbe.
The Dead Zone was also transformed into a television series on USA Network, which aired from 2002 to 2007. It featured Anthony Michael Hall as Smith and Sean Patrick Flanery as Stillson. Christopher Walken hilariously parodied his character from the film on Saturday Night Live, portraying "Ed Glosser, Trivial Psychic" who amusingly predicted trivial misfortunes such as forgotten coffee cups and ice cream headaches.
