Although Independence Day was a huge hit at the box office, the filmmakers, including Emmerich, were unable to create a successful franchise from it. It took until 2016 for a sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, to be released, and by that time, Will Smith was no longer part of the project. The movie failed to impress, earning only $389 million. Vivica A. Fox, one of the stars of Independence Day, recently expressed her belief that the lack of Will Smith's involvement was the reason for the sequel's failure. Speaking to A.V. Club, she said:

"I genuinely believe that not having Will Smith return was a missed opportunity. Although we had most of the original cast, the absence of Will Smith, I think, was the true missing link for the success of 'Independence Day 2'. I'll be honest - when I attended the premiere, I had doubts about how the fans would react. And as expected, they expressed their disappointment on Twitter. The response was overwhelming."

Emmerich has revealed his intentions for Independence Day 3 and expressed hope that following Disney's acquisition of Fox, the film could possibly be produced for Disney+. However, adapting Independence Day for the small screen would appear to be an imprudent decision considering the grandeur of the original film and how crucial the cinematic experience was to its success. While bringing back Smith may help revive the franchise, his career has been significantly impacted by his notorious Oscars incident. As of now, there are no concrete plans in motion, leaving live-tweet events as the closest opportunity for fans to partake in a renewed Independence Day experience.
