The Initiative has provided an update on the progress of the Perfect Dark reboot, stating that the announcement trailer was created before decisions were made regarding core gameplay systems. Despite the announcement being made three years ago, the development of Perfect Dark has not been smooth, and it still has several years of development remaining before it is completed.
Unlike other Xbox Series X/S game announcements, Perfect Dark was not revealed in the summer of 2020. Instead, it was showcased during The Game Awards 2020 in December. The announcement trailer only provided minimal information about the reboot, touching on the setting of a post-ecological collapse, the return of protagonist Joanna Dark, and the presence of powerful corporations with secretive agendas. This simplicity in the trailer was due to the fact that the development of the Perfect Dark reboot was still in its early stages.
According to a developer who worked at the studio in 2020, the Initiative had not yet finalized any core game mechanics when they released the trailer, as reported by IGN. The trailer was described as being far ahead of the actual game's progress. This explains why there has been very little information shared about Perfect Dark in the three years since its release, as it was still in its early stages of development.
However, Perfect Dark fans shouldn't expect an update on the new game anytime soon. Multiple developers working on the project have confirmed that it is still in the earliest stages of development, even three years later. According to these sources, a release date is still at least two to three years away.
The reasons provided for the delays of Perfect Dark are understandable. The Initiative, a new first-party studio venturing into AAA game development, had the additional challenge of working on the game amidst the pandemic. However, there are further contributing factors. Reports suggest that the studio has experienced significant talent departures, managerial indecisiveness, and other notable obstacles. Nevertheless, the partnership with Crystal Dynamics is helping progress the project. It is not surprising to Xbox fans that one of the company's early announcements for Xbox Series X/S was probably made too prematurely. This also applies to Avowed, Fable, and Everwild. However, three years later, Perfect Dark appears to be in a more unfavorable state compared to Xbox's other 2020 announcements. It is an unfortunate situation.
Perfect Dark is in development for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
