Star Wars Eclipse, set to be released in 2026, has faced significant development challenges since its launch, according to an industry insider. This game, announced in December 2021 at The Game Awards, is the latest project from the designers behind Fahrenheit, Heavy Rain, and Detroit: Become Human. Taking place in the High Republic era before the original film trilogy, Star Wars Eclipse boasts a narrative that branches out with various playable characters, similar to previous titles by Quantic Dream. However, the game has encountered notable hurdles throughout its development process.
Those issues are still ongoing at present, according to Tom Henderson, a well-informed figure in the industry. He refers to the same sources who previously disclosed NetEase's acquisition of Quantic Dream even before the official announcement in August 2022. With this situation in mind, it is possible that Star Wars Eclipse could be delayed beyond 2026, as stated by the same source. However, even if the project manages to meet its tentative release timeframe, it is still probable that it will be the final Star Wars game among the ones currently announced to hit store shelves.
The growth challenges faced by the development of Star Wars Eclipse are widely believed to be caused by Quantic Dream's toxic workplace lawsuit and the negative reputation it has generated. Previously, the studio dismissed the lawsuit as a smear campaign, but it was eventually overturned by a French court of appeals in 2021. Prior to the lawsuit, reports of hostile working conditions at Quantic were published by Le Monde, Mediapart, and Canard PC. In response, the developer filed libel lawsuits against Le Monde and Mediapart, resulting in a win against the former and a loss against the latter.
Star Wars Eclipse is not the only game based on the popular sci-fi franchise that is currently facing development challenges. The highly anticipated remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic also encountered difficulties, leading to a change of developers last summer after receiving negative feedback from Sony. Previously, Sony had negotiated an exclusive agreement with Embracer Group for timed exclusivity on the game for the PS5. Additionally, the popular MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic is currently experiencing turbulence, with Broadsword, the creator of Ultima Online, taking over support as BioWare recently underwent layoffs.
Star Wars Eclipse is currently in development.
