Upon hearing the news of Helen Holland's passing, Buckingham Palace released a statement on behalf of the Duchess of Edinburgh expressing her profound sadness. The statement conveyed the Duchess's deepest sympathies and condolences to Ms. Holland's loved ones during this difficult time.
An elderly woman named Helen Holland was hit by a vehicle earlier this month and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Despite receiving treatment from paramedics at the scene, she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is currently investigating the incident. In a statement, Helen's son Martin Holland revealed that his mother suffered from multiple broken bones and massive internal injuries, and fought for her life for almost two weeks. However, the irreversible damage to her brain led to her passing.
Chief Superintendent Richard Smith, head of the Metropolitan Police’s Royalty and Specialist Protection Unit, expressed his condolences and addressed the incident that led to Helen’s death. He emphasized that officers are aware that their actions, whether on or off duty, are subject to scrutiny. As a result, the incident was referred for an independent investigation by the IOPC, and the police department is fully cooperating with and supporting the inquiry.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Sophie, aged 58, will personally contact the Holland family. Initially, when Helen was taken to the hospital after the accident, the royal had expressed her concern and prayers for her. The May 11 statement stated that the Duchess is appreciative of the prompt response by the emergency services and will closely monitor any updates. As the incident is still under investigation, any additional comments are not appropriate at this time.
In June 2019, a police motorcycle in Prince William and Princess Kate's escort hit pedestrian Irene Mayor, resulting in a similar incident. Kensington Palace's spokesperson released a statement stating the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's concern and sadness regarding the accident. The statement also conveyed their best wishes to Irene and her family, and their intention to remain in touch during her recovery.
