New behind-the-scenes images from the set of Wicked feature Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in preparation for their joint filming. Wicked, a highly anticipated film adaptation of the beloved musical, is based on Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The story revolves around Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), the future Wicked Witch, as she undergoes a gradual transformation into the iconic character encountered by Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Accompanied by Glinda the Good Witch (Ariana Grande), Elphaba navigates the challenges of everyday life while embarking on her path towards darkness.
Although Erivo and Grande have been previously seen on set, these latest photographs capture them side by side as they prepare for their upcoming scene. Take a look at the exclusive shots below:
Erivo and Grande flawlessly embody their characters, with Erivo sporting a vibrant green complexion and Grande donning an all-pink ensemble, complete with strikingly golden hair. They exude an aura reminiscent of the enchanting world of Wicked, seemingly preparing themselves to mesmerize the audience with a captivating rendition of the song "Popular".
Everything We Know About Wicked
Grande and Erivo have a busy schedule ahead of them as Wicked is not going to be a one-and-done film. The movie is set to have two parts, with the first initially planned for release on December 25, 2024, and the second on December 25, 2025. However, there has been a change in the release schedule for Wicked's first part, which is now scheduled to be released on November 27. This is a positive development.
The film was divided to avoid cutting any of Wicked's songs or characters, demonstrating the cast and crew's commitment to a faithful adaptation of the musical. To ensure that the film isn't merely a replica of the original play, it will introduce some new songs. Jon M. Chu, the director of In the Heights, has been enlisted to direct Wicked, with filming commencing in late 2022.
Regarding the sequel, tentatively titled Wicked Part Two: For Good, there is no information available about the start of filming. However, Erivo has mentioned that the script appears to be ready. As the filming for Wicked progresses, more details are likely to emerge. For now, it is sufficient to note that Grande and Erivo appear to be ideal fits for the roles of the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch themselves.
