Although Sex Education season 4 was not initially intended to be the show's final chapter, the creative team faced a tough situation where season 5 could potentially move forward without some of its crucial characters. Season 4 already had to handle the departures of Olivia (Simone Ashley), Lily (Tanya Reynolds), and Ola (Patricia Allison), but the biggest blow was when Gatwa and Mackey also announced their own exits if Sex Education were to be renewed for season 5.
Gatwa's Eric and Mackey's Maeve are two of the most beloved characters in the show, making it difficult to imagine season 5 without them.
