Exclusive: Production for Sony's 2024 Spider-Man spinoff movie finally confirmed

Sony's upcoming film El Muerto, which features Bad Bunny in the lead role, is set to expand the Spider-Man Universe with the releases of Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web. While details for the other two films have been widely discussed, including plot points, set photos, and casting updates, very little has been revealed about El Muerto's storyline or cast. However, a recent production list from the Film & Television Industry Alliance indicates that filming for El Muerto may commence on August 7, 2023. This is the first update on the film since it received a negative release date update, with Bad Bunny's publicist previously stating that the project was at a standstill, explaining its lack of production progress. Despite the reported filming start date, it remains possible that El Muerto may experience further delays.

El Muerto Will Likely Get A New Release Date

The release date for El Muerto is currently set for January 12, 2024, however, given the information that the movie may not have started filming in August, it seems unlikely that Sony's Spider-Man Universe film will meet its anticipated release date. Looking at the past and future SSU releases, it is possible to estimate when El Muerto may eventually make its way to theaters. The SSU has already released three movies, including Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius. Venom began production in October 2017 and was released in theaters a year later in October 2018. Morbius attempted to follow a similar pattern with its filming start and release date, but due to the pandemic, cameras did not begin rolling until February 2019 and the movie was not released until April 2022. Venom: Let There Be Carnage started filming in November 2019 and was released in October 2021, also affected by the pandemic.

With two upcoming movies in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, it's worth considering when El Muerto could be released. Kraven the Hunter is set to hit theaters this October, having begun filming in February 2022, while Madame Web is scheduled for a February 2024 release, with production starting in July 2022. Sony typically releases their Spider-Man Universe films about a year after production begins, making August 2024 the earliest possible release date for El Muerto, assuming the reported filming start is accurate.
