The future of the Borderlands movie is uncertain as a key person departs amidst a troubled production, raising concerns about the project's prospects

The future of the Borderlands movie adaptation is now uncertain as a key writer has left the project. Despite the recent success of video game adaptations in live-action, a faithful adaptation of Borderlands seemed promising. The captivating sci-fi adventure revolves around Lilith, a criminal who embarks on a journey to her home world of Pandora to search for a missing girl. With its vibrant characters and captivating storyline, Borderlands is just one example of a video game that has the potential to translate well onto the big screen. The involvement of renowned actors like Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis in various roles adds even more prestige to the project.

The Borderlands movie once had impressive figures involved, including Craig Mazin, the acclaimed writer of HBO's Chernobyl, and Neil Druckmann, the creator of The Last of Us video game. They were collaborating on both the movie and the highly anticipated Last of Us television series. However, recent reports indicate that Mazin has decided to step away from the Borderlands movie. According to the Writers Guild website, Mazin has chosen to remove his name from the project and will instead be credited as Joe Crombie. This move is reminiscent of how filmmakers would use the pseudonym Alan Smithee when they no longer wanted to be associated with a film.

Adding to a series of unfortunate events, there has been major delays in the release of the film Borderlands, which was originally shot in 2021. The main obstacle holding up the film is the need for reshoots, now under the direction of Tim Miller instead of the original director Roth. In addition, other writers, such as Sam Levinson from Euphoria, have been brought in to make changes to the script.

The concerns surrounding the film are further compounded by the departure of writer-director Mazin from the project. Mazin has a reputable track record, particularly with his successful series Chernobyl. His involvement in The Last of Us also added to the anticipation for the film. Attaching his name to a project that seems to be going downhill could potentially harm his career, especially with the highly anticipated second season of The Last of Us on the horizon. It would be in the best interest of everyone involved to cut their losses and move on if Borderlands continues down this troubled path.

Borderlands is in post-production.
