Reimagined from the classic 1984 series, the 2023 version of Night Court marks Lacretta's breakthrough performance. She made her debut on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, then went on to star in popular shows like 30 Rock, Broad City, and Gotham. Apart from Night Court, Lacretta's latest project was the movie Second Act, alongside Jennifer Lopez, where she played the character Suzi Teplitsky.
In the original series, there were two bailiffs, but Lacretta's character, Gurgs, now handles the role solo. Gurgs stands out as one of the few characters who embraces Abby's unconventional courtroom methods and consistently supports the judge. Alongside Lacretta, the main cast of Night Court features Melissa Rauch, India de Beaufort, Nyambi Nyambi, and John Larroquette.
Gurg's Sense Of Humor Is Unique To Her Character
Lacretta shares that Gurg's sense of humor is a key aspect of her character in Night Court. She explains that Gurg's humor is distinct and adds depth to her personality. Gurg's wit and comedic timing bring a special charm to the show, making her a fan favorite. Lacretta hints at even more hilarious moments to come in Gurg's love life in season 2.
Night Court Reboot Neil Gurgs and Olivia - Gurgs' Sense Of Humor Is Unique To Her Character
I know you were a fan of the original Night Court. Now that we have almost two seasons of the reboot, what similarities or differences are you enjoying about the two versions?
Lacretta: We are fortunate to be filming on the original set of the show, which is pretty amazing. Having a background in theater, being on stage and set brings out different layers of performance. It's special to be in this space, knowing that those before us have graced the same stage. It feels like a comfortable and familiar place to work in.
Gurgs is, without a doubt, the funniest character in my opinion. Your delivery of lines is truly remarkable. What do you love about her sense of humor, and how do you think it complements the other characters on a sitcom like this?
Lacretta: Sometimes, they have a unique way of setting up their jokes. Gurgs can suddenly appear or make a comment that may not be exactly on point, but somehow fits perfectly. It's unpredictable, but it all comes together beautifully, and I find that really enjoyable. There's this group of musicians, with strings playing, and then a trombone pops in randomly.
Gurgs and Dan have a great chemistry on screen. Their banter feels so natural. It made me curious if you and John ever do any improv during rehearsals.
Lacretta and I talk a lot, and I believe it's because we've gotten to know each other better since day one. I feel like I have an old soul, which helps us connect so well. Kerry Butler, who is a mutual friend, has worked with both of us. Kerry warned me that he can be a bit tough, but assured me that he's a sweetheart. I appreciated the heads up and felt reassured.
When I finally met Lacretta, I instantly felt a connection and knew everything would be fine. I really enjoy our scenes together, and my friends always ask if I'll have a scene with Dan. Those scenes are what I look forward to the most.
Night Court Season 2 Will Feature Original Cast Members, Gurgs' Romance & More
Marsha Warfield as Roz and John Larroquette as Dan clinking glasses in Night Court season 2 episode 1 - Night Court Season 2 Will Feature Original Cast Members, Gurgs' Romance & More
You've had some amazing guest stars on the show. Is there an actor you'd love to see with a great storyline?
The big question since the beginning has been, will the Wheelers make a return? Well, I can tell you to stay tuned because you might just see them again very soon.
Have you thought about a new storyline for Gurgs that hasn't been shown yet? Lacretta mentioned that there's been some hints about her dating someone, and there's an upcoming Fleet Week episode where we'll see how she navigates being in a relationship during Fleet Week. It's possible that we may or may not see her duke it out before the season ends.
I'm excited for Marsha Warfield to return and see where her storyline goes. Last time, we learned she's a private detective with a fiancé, and they were planning their wedding. That's all I'll say about that.
