Director Ali Selim reveals the timeline for when Rhodey became a Skrull in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pinpointing "Captain America: Civil War."
Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, urged fans to revisit previous instances of Rhodey's appearances to uncover the subtle hints that indicated he was actually a Skrull from the beginning. This revelation of Rhodey being a Skrull in "Secret Invasion" will deeply impact the highly anticipated movie "Armor Wars" as well as other forthcoming projects.
Secret Invasion director Ali Selim has shared more information about one of the show's most shocking moments - the reveal of a Skrull posing as Don Cheadle's War Machine. Adapted from the 2008 comic story arc in Marvel Comics, Secret Invasion follows former S.H.I.E.L.D Director Nick Fury and Skrull ally Talos as they embark on a mission to stop a rogue group of shape-shifting aliens from invading Earth. While the show promised numerous surprises, it ultimately fell short in executing its most impressive twist - the revelation that the beloved MCU character Rhodey (also known as War Machine) had been secretly replaced by a Skrull for quite some time.
The actor found it seemingly easy to make the decision for Cheadle's character to have the big reveal. Even Marvel Cinematic Universe boss Kevin Feige went on record stating that Rhodey had to be a Skrull. Secret Invasion director Selim addressed the most common question fans have had after the reveal in an interview with ComicBook. "A lot of people have asked about, 'Definitively, when did Rhodey...?' I think his legs not working at the end of episode six and him being in the hospital gown points to 'Captain America: Civil War'."
Selim echoed Feige's view on the intriguing nature of the ambiguity from a fan's standpoint. He questioned whether it was necessary for the story to have a definitive answer or if it would be more enjoyable for the audience to reassess every moment involving Rhodey, contemplating the possibility that he may have been a Skrull. This way, viewers can decide for themselves or wait for answers in the upcoming series "Armor Wars." Despite some criticisms, the reveal and other surprises in "Secret Invasion" have left people speculating about the duration and covert existence of the Skrull threat in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While this development may have lacked impact in the "Secret Invasion" show, it will undoubtedly have significant consequences for the plot of "Armor Wars," a project centered on War Machine and starring Cheadle, which recently transitioned from a Disney Plus series to an MCU film. The shift in perspectives resulting from Rhodes being replaced by a Skrull, coupled with the emotional toll of missing out on the death of his closest friend and allies, suggests that the underwhelming response to "Secret Invasion" could actually benefit "Armor Wars" and other future endeavors.
However, this optimistic approach disregards the impact of Marvel's poor pacing, which ultimately resulted in the failure of Secret Invasion and disappointed fans who were eagerly anticipating it. Although Marvel Studios is not directly responsible for the current situation affecting various projects due to the strike action affecting major studios, the continuous decline in fan interest and the halt in numerous projects suggests that significant adjustments and difficult decisions may be necessary for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These changes are crucial if the executives hope to recapture the enchantment experienced during previous phases. Stream Secret Invasion now on Disney Plus.
