Exclusive Insight: Surprising Transformations for Owen and Mel in The Last of Us Part 2 Season 2 on HBO

Exploring the dynamic bond of Owen and Mel from The Last of Us Part 2, HBO's second season has the opportunity to reshape their characters, adding intriguing layers to their relationship

Despite its controversial beginning, The Last of Us Part 2 is widely regarded as one of the best recent games. While some fans may not appreciate the direction of the game's story, it is undeniably well-crafted, with strong character relationships, dialogue, motivations, and set pieces. The upcoming HBO series based on The Last of Us is expected to maintain the same level of quality as the original game.

Due to the ongoing writers' strike, the second season of HBO's The Last of Us is likely to be delayed for a significant period of time. However, once it is released, it is expected to adapt the extensive story of The Last of Us Part 2. Unlike the first game, which had a relatively straightforward story that was easily adaptable for television, The Last of Us Part 2 presents challenges with its numerous characters, plot points, and backstories that need to be unveiled in a limited timeframe. With so much content to work with, HBO may need to make cuts, potentially eliminating characters like Owen and Mel.

How HBO Could Change The Last of Us Part 2's Owen and Mel

Exclusive Insight: Surprising Transformations for Owen and Mel in The Last of Us Part 2 Season 2 on HBO

The Last of Us Part 2, much like its predecessor, presents incredibly well-developed character relationships that are among the best in gaming. While Joel and Ellie's relationship remains central to the story, there are added layers of complexity, including themes of betrayal, loss, and forgiveness that shape the dynamics between all the characters. The relationship between Ellie and Abby, initially perceived as a simple revenge tale, is actually a intricate web of intertwined histories and emotions. Additionally, the relationships between Ellie and Dina, Dina and Jessie, and Ellie and Tommy are seamlessly interwoven, resulting in authentic and relatable characters.

However, not all aspects of The Last of Us Part 2's storytelling are flawless. While one half of the game focuses on well-defined and captivating character relationships, the other half falls slightly short in comparison. When players take control of Abby, they are introduced to a new set of characters, most of whom are Abby's former Firefly companions. Unfortunately, these characters receive minimal screen time, leaving players with limited knowledge about their connection to Abby and their individual motivations. As a result, they are not as compelling as Ellie's group.

Despite the increased focus on screen time, some members of Abby's group, specifically Mel and Owen, are not particularly engaging. The inclusion of a love triangle between Abby's former boyfriend and Mel's soon-to-be baby's father feels out of place in the context of The Last of Us Part 2's exploration of weighty themes such as grief and revenge. The interactions between these three characters fail to elicit the desired reaction from players, especially considering the myriad of other compelling storylines. As a result, the tangled relationships of Mel, Owen, and Abby do not hold much significance.

If HBO were to adapt The Last of Us, it would be advisable to omit this love triangle plotline entirely. The only truly consequential moment involving these characters occurs when Abby discovers their lifeless bodies, serving as a turning point for her character and highlighting the potential overreach of Ellie's quest for vengeance. However, if Mel and Owen were to appear in the HBO adaptation, it would likely be in a more streamlined capacity.

The Last of Us Part 2 is available now for PS4.
