Gareth Edwards, the director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has recently returned to the camera but has not yet watched Andor. Serving as a prequel to the 2016 Star Wars spinoff film, this Disney+ show delves into the origin story of Diego Luna's character, who is recruited by the Rebel Alliance to utilize his thieving skills in their battle against the Galactic Empire. With an impressive cast including Kyle Soller, Stellan Skarsgård, and Genevieve O'Reilly, among others, Andor has received widespread critical acclaim and is widely considered the top Star Wars show to date.

During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant at San Diego Comic-Con, The Creator filmmaker was asked about his thoughts on Disney+'s Andor. The director admitted that he has yet to watch the prequel show to his Star Wars spinoff movie, but he had a valid reason for not seeing the highly acclaimed title. Check out Edwards' explanation below:

To be completely honest, we just wrapped up [The Creator] last Friday, so I haven't had the chance to see it yet. In fact, I haven't watched any television or any content on Disney+. The only thing I did see was the ILM documentary called "Light of Magic," which is absolutely incredible. Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to dive into Andor yet, but I will definitely get back to you on that. However, I did catch the trailer when it was released while we were filming at Pinewood Studios, and it looked absolutely amazing. I have full confidence that it's in the capable hands of a talented team, and I'm genuinely excited for everyone involved with the project.

Why Rogue One Was One Of Star Wars' Most Important Movies

Despite almost a decade passing since its theatrical debut, as well as the subsequent release of multiple big-screen installations in the franchise, Rogue One remains a pivotal film within the Star Wars universe. Released in 2016, this installment marked the franchise's initial foray into anthology storytelling within the Lucasfilm universe. While still maintaining connections to the legendary Skywalker Saga, Rogue One also offers a distinct and captivating experience for newcomers.

The anthology experiment proved successful for the Star Wars franchise initially, with Rogue One receiving critical acclaim and earning over $1 billion at the box office. This encouraged Disney and Lucasfilm to continue the standalone format with Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018. However, Solo faced production issues and lacked audience interest, resulting in mixed reviews and becoming the franchise's first box office failure.

Despite this setback, Rogue One's success remained influential for Lucasfilm, leading to the creation of The Mandalorian and subsequently Andor on Disney+. Although Andor is expected to conclude after its second season, its rapid rise to success has reaffirmed that Edwards' and Gilroy's more mature and grounded approach to the Star Wars universe was the key to launching the 2016 film to its triumph.
