Newly released concept art for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse offers a more detailed glimpse at an Easter egg that observant fans had previously spotted in the film.
Oscar Isaac's character Miguel O'Hara, also known as Spider-Man 2099, has garnered a devoted fan base in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Miguel serves as the Spider-Man of Nueva York in the year 2099 and acts as the leader of the Spider Society. His mission is to protect the Spider-Verse from threats across multiple dimensions. However, Miguel becomes an adversary when he attempts to prevent Miles from rescuing his father, fearing that such an act could lead to the collapse of his entire universe.
Character designer Kris Anka shared concept art for Miguel's white suit in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Observant fans may have noticed something being worked on in the background of the scene where Miguel and Miles first meet. Although it was unclear initially, some fans speculated that it could be Miguel's White Suit from the comics. This theory has been confirmed by the concept art and the accompanying Instagram caption.
The concept art is intriguing because it only portrays the suit during the construction phase and not when it is finished or worn. Some of the concepts suggest that the suit might be built as a robot, while others depict it as more of an exosuit or some other futuristic technology from 2099. In the comics, Peter creates his white suit using kevlar and unstable molecules for added protection. Additional concept art by Anka indicates that Miguel might have also worn a black suit, similar to his original comic book appearance.
Spider-Man 2099's original suit in the comics was black and red, with blue highlights added for detailing, a common practice for characters like Venom at the time. As time passed, the suit's design shifted to blue in other forms of media, eventually being adopted in the comics as well. Although the blue suit is visually appealing, it is intriguing to think how the original black design would have looked.
It remains uncertain if the suit will be featured and worn in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse or if it will remain as a hidden reference to Spider-Man. Considering the impact of various details in the first film on its sequel, such as a bagel, it is not improbable for the white suit to make an appearance in the third and final installment.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters.
