Isabelle Fuhrman recently reflected on her discarded storyline for Escape Room: Tournament of Champions. The horror-thriller, released in 2021, served as a sequel to the successful 2019 film. Fuhrman, known for her role in the horror genre, discussed the changes made to her character's storyline and expressed her willingness to potentially return for a third installment.
Isabelle Fuhrman: It's funny how Adam and I still keep in touch, I remember that. This happened during COVID, and I believe they conducted several test screenings for major studio films. It seems that many people were confused by that particular storyline, or it didn't have the intended impact they had expected.
That's why they decided to reshoot it, and I had no idea they would include the alternative ending on the DVD. Nobody informed me about it, I had absolutely no clue. In fact, I only watched the movie for the first time last year.
I watched both versions and genuinely loved my own version. However, I also acknowledge that the other version was quite impressive. I'm not overly attached to my idea because if a third installment is made, they will probably stick with the ending they initially premiered. It wouldn't make sense unless they brought me back as a completely new character. Nonetheless, I had a fantastic time working on it, especially since I had previously collaborated with Taylor Russell. When working on a film, you have no control over how it ultimately shapes out, as there are numerous reasons why changes are made or decisions are shifted. It's just the nature of the industry.
I truly enjoyed working on the project and would happily collaborate with Adam again. If they were interested in bringing me back, I would definitely be open to discussing it. However, I don't view it as a major heartbreak, like it might have been in the past. It felt reasonable and the open communication about it prevented it from devastating me. I saw it as a creative decision and accepted it as such.
Escape Room 2's Cut Alternate Storyline Explained
The existence of an alternative storyline for Escape Room: Tournament of Champions was not known until a few months before the sequel's release. It was initially teased as an extended version of the movie. However, those who purchased the Blu-ray version were surprised to find that the new cut was almost an entirely different movie. It seemed to set up a different sequel compared to the theatrical release, focusing on James Frain's character, Henry, who is a designer of escape rooms, and his daughter Claire. Claire has been locked up since her mother was killed after threatening to divorce Henry.
In the alternative cut, the adult Claire is introduced during the transition phase of the Acid Rain room. She reveals to Zoey that she is being forced to become a puzzle maker and proposes a plan to rescue themselves and Ben. The alternate cut concludes with the revelation that Claire is actually evil and was the one who killed her mother. This sets her up as the antagonist for future sequels. On the other hand, the theatrical version of Escape Room: Tournament of Champions famously reveals that Deborah Ann Woll's character, Amanda, is alive and has been compelled to design escape rooms for Minos in order to protect her daughter. Zoey is chosen to replace her.
