While other productions are facing shutdowns due to strikes, Doctor Who season 14 has received exciting news. Following the three 60th Anniversary specials airing in November, the upcoming season will premiere. David Tennant is returning as the Doctor for the specials, but for season 14, Ncuti Gatwa from Sex Education will be taking on the role of the Fifteenth Doctor.
Unlike many other shows affected by strikes, Doctor Who has managed to avoid major disruptions. Showrunner Russell T Davies, who previously helmed the show from 2005 to 2010 and is returning for season 14, has revealed that filming has already concluded. Doctor Who Season 14 Was Unaffected By Strikes
Doctor Who season 14 commenced filming in December, with the episodes yet to be unveiled. Considering the scheduled premiere of the Anniversary specials in November, it is probable that season 14 will be released in 2024, most likely in the Fall or Winter.
Unlike other productions affected by the current strike, Doctor Who remains on schedule. Since it is not an American production, the ongoing strikes do not impact its filming process. This is also the case for House of the Dragon, which continues production despite SAG-AFTRA's strike. Unlike in the United States, the actor's union in the United Kingdom, known as Equity, does not mandate actors to strike in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA. In fact, such an action could create legal complications for many actors, as the U.K. has stringent laws regarding union regulations.
Equity has provided support to SAG-AFTRA, although its means of doing so are limited. While SAG-AFTRA actors are unable to film or promote their productions during the strike, Equity members are expected to continue their work with minimal disruption. Consequently, the filming of Doctor Who was able to proceed uninterrupted.
Even if there had been a joint response to halt filming, it is unlikely that the strike would have posed a significant threat to season 14 of Doctor Who. Filming had already concluded on July 15, just one day after the SAG-AFTRA strike began. While losing a day of production is noteworthy, it is not overwhelmingly significant. Post-production editing could have likely commenced for season 14, with only a few scenes missing. With filming officially completed, Doctor Who is well on track for the release of its fourteenth season.
