Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 players on Xbox and PC have discovered the early appearance of the PlayStation exclusive multiplayer character, Oni, in their operator roster.
Oni was originally scheduled to be released for Xbox and PC players on October 27, marking one year since the launch of Modern Warfare 2. However, it seems that this early availability is likely an error, considering that Xbox will not have complete control over Call of Duty until 2024, despite their recent acquisition of Activision.
Some players on Xbox and PC who play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have discovered that the character Oni, which was originally a timed exclusive for PlayStation, has appeared in their operator roster. Oni, who belongs to the KorTac faction in Call of Duty, was supposed to become available to Xbox and PC players on October 27, exactly one year after the launch of Modern Warfare 2.
Currently, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is in its sixth and final season. This season introduced a battle pass with a Spawn theme, two new 6v6 maps, a new Gunfight map, three new weapons, and more. The highlight of Season 6 is the Halloween-themed Haunting event, which features crossovers with popular horror characters and IPs such as Ash Williams from Evil Dead, Lilith and Inarius from Diablo, and Alucard from Hellsing. The collaboration with Diablo is particularly significant, as players can encounter and defeat The Butcher in Warzone during the event to earn a special transmog cosmetic for use in Diablo 4.
As Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 approaches its one-year anniversary, CharlieIntel highlighted on Twitter that some players on Xbox and PC have discovered Oni in their operator menus following the latest update. Although the Oni operator appears to be fully unlocked for PlayStation users, there are reports that players on Xbox and PC cannot actually equip the operator. It's worth noting that only the base Oni skin is unlocked, and none of his other skins are available.
Despite Xbox's recent acquisition of Activision for $69 billion and their plans to remove PlayStation's exclusive Call of Duty content, this is likely just a simple mistake. Xbox will not have full control over Call of Duty until 2024. Additionally, Oni is expected to be officially available on Xbox and PC in just over a week, but players on these platforms are currently unable to fully equip the operator. Even though Xbox now owns Activision, PlayStation still holds exclusive marketing rights for Call of Duty until Modern Warfare 3, and they have already announced an exclusive operator named Lockpick for MW3's release next month.
Regardless of the outcome of the early Oni appearance issue - whether it gets fixed or is overlooked by Activision for a week - players on Xbox and PC who gain official access to Oni on October 27 will be able to continue using him in Modern Warfare 3 when it releases two weeks later on November 10. With the highly acclaimed Warzone event, The Haunting, marking the winding down of Modern Warfare 2, players are eagerly anticipating the launch of Modern Warfare 3. The recent open beta of the game has received extensive praise, particularly for its enhanced movement mechanics and revamped Modern Warfare 2 maps (originally released in 2009).
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
