Blizzard president Mike Ybarra says rumors of a pirate-themed World of Warcraft expansion are false, but fans remain skeptical.
Ybarra's comment may not provide a definitive answer, given that World of Warcraft developers have a history of manipulating the truth to safeguard secrets.
Enthusiastic fans continue to engage in speculation regarding the potential of a seafaring expansion and hold onto the belief that a pirate character could potentially be part of it.
Blizzard's president, Mike Ybarra, recently refuted rumors claiming that the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion would revolve around pirates. However, despite his statement, many players are still skeptical about the veracity of these rumors.
As the Dragonflight expansion nears its halfway mark and with BlizzCon on the horizon, World of Warcraft enthusiasts have started speculating about what the next expansion could entail. A popular theory suggests that it might be a seafaring expansion, supported by in-game lore referencing lost continents and pirate fleets, as well as various water-themed items in the World of Warcraft cash shop.
World of Warcraft enthusiast and content producer Mr. Dave shared his thoughts on the ongoing rumor about a pirate-themed expansion in the game. Although many were eager for such an expansion, Mr. Dave remained less enthusiastic. As he engaged in discussions with fellow fans who came across his post on Twitter, Ybarra chimed in and seemingly put an end to the rumor by saying, "No pirates."
However, it is important to note that Ybarra's comment may not be as definitive as it appears. In the past, World of Warcraft developers have occasionally misled the community in order to safeguard surprises. They have used similar statements, such as during the Battle for Azeroth expansion, where they jokingly insisted that there were "no Old Gods in BFA." Additionally, they have carefully avoided discussing certain topics before eventually revealing them, as they did with the Augmentation Evoker in Dragonflight. While these actions were not malicious lies, World of Warcraft has been known to intentionally manipulate the truth or modify their plans in the past.
It goes without saying that World of Warcraft enthusiasts are already scouring Ybarra's statement for any potential loopholes. Many have pointed out that the phrase "No pirates" does not completely rule out the possibility of a seafaring expansion, and that a journey to an unexplored continent could still be a possibility. Some fans have also mentioned that even if the expansion does not revolve around pirates, the likelihood of a pirate character making an appearance somewhere in the game remains high. Therefore, fans should not completely dismiss Ybarra's words as definitive.
In any case, players won't need to wait long to discover what lies ahead for WoW. BlizzCon is set to begin on November 3, and fans are convinced that World of Warcraft will unveil its next expansion at the convention. Regardless of what it may be, players are eagerly anticipating seeing what lessons World of Warcraft has taken from Dragonflight, and if it can sustain the momentum it has built for itself.
World of Warcraft is available now on PC.
