Summary
James Prichard, Agatha Christie's great-grandson, reveals that there are 33 total Hercule Poirot stories to choose from for future movies.
Christie's Poirot novels offer a remarkable level of adaptability, presenting a series of unpredictable stories that can be told in any sequence. The popularity of "A Haunting in Venice" and Kenneth Branagh's enthusiasm for creating additional Poirot movies may pave the way for future films. However, the time limitations impose a finite constraint on the number of movies that can be produced.
Agatha Christie's great-grandson, James Prichard, has shared his thoughts on the potential for more Hercule Poirot movies following A Haunting in Venice. Kenneth Branagh returns as the iconic detective for the third time in this new film, reprising his role from Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. However, these films only scratch the surface of Poirot's many mystery adventures, as Christie wrote numerous books featuring the character.
In an interview with Inverse, Prichard discussed the possibility of future Poirot movies after A Haunting in Venice. He confirmed that the films are produced one at a time but highlighted the fact that there are 33 Poirot stories to choose from in the future. Below is Prichard's complete statement:
I'm uncertain about using the phrase "cinematic universe." I have a strong desire to produce additional movies like this one. I find the process enjoyable. I believe Hollywood movies have a unique ability to reach a vast audience. They possess a grandeur and aesthetic appeal that is unparalleled.
Therefore, if this film achieves success and both Ken and 20th Century are interested in making more, I would be extremely surprised if we don't continue. Numerous stories remain untold. My great-grandmother authored a total of 33 comprehensive Poirot novels, providing an abundance of material to select from.
We proceed with one movie at a time, anticipating its success and the potential interest in creating a sequel. Should this subsequent film also thrive, we may consider developing another installment. However, there will eventually be a constraint. Ken has personal ambitions beyond filmmaking, acknowledging the limited time available in the world.
What Could The Next Hercule Poirot Mystery Be?
The variety of Christie's Poirot mystery stories gives ample choices for a captivating continuation after the thrilling A Haunting in Venice. The flexibility of the Poirot novels lies in their ability to be told in any sequence, making it impossible to anticipate the next enigma and keeping Christie enthusiasts constantly intrigued.
Branagh's version of the character could explore classic Poirot mysteries like The Mysterious Affair at Styles, Peril at End House, and Five Little Pigs. Each story brings a fresh murder mystery in a different setting, ensuring the film series remains unpredictable. While it may not be considered a "cinematic universe," Branaugh's Poirot mysteries have the potential to become an enthralling series that evolves over time.
Furthermore, future Poirot movies might adopt names that add to the element of surprise. The latest film, based on Christie's Hallowe'en Party, undergoes a name change and a few alterations to the story. With a wealth of mysteries to adapt, the upcoming installment after A Haunting in Venice could be equally as perplexing as the cases Poirot faces.
