Summary
Hulu is removing several classic shows from its streaming service, including Arrested Development and 90210.
Some shows, such as the sci-fi series Dollhouse, are not available on any other streaming platform due to their licensing agreements coming to an end. Hulu has decided not to renew these shows, resulting in their removal.
Several classic shows are leaving Hulu, and some do not have another streaming platform to call home. The initial promise of streaming was that it would provide convenience for consumers, allowing them to easily access a wide range of television shows. It was believed that most dramas and comedies could be found on one of three platforms, and that new shows would always be available at the click of a button for a subscription fee. However, the streaming landscape has changed significantly in recent years, with shows disappearing and original content being abruptly removed.
According to Vulture, Hulu's selection of television shows is about to become smaller, especially in terms of classic programs. By the end of September, the streaming service will remove titles such as Arrested Development, Beverly Hills 90210, Hill Street Blues, Ally McBeal, The Bob Newhart Show, The Practice, Don’t Trust the B— in Apt. 23, Better Off Ted, 7th Heaven, Speechless, and Touch. Some of these titles, like Speechless, Better Off Ted, and the sci-fi series Dollhouse, created by Joss Whedon and starring Eliza Dushku, do not currently have another streaming platform to call home.
Why Are Big Shows Leaving Hulu?
According to a report by Vulture, the majority of the shows leaving Hulu are from 20th Century Fox TV, which is owned by Disney. Although Hulu is also partly owned by Disney, NBCUniversal holds a minority stake. However, the reasons behind these removals are not related to tax write-offs or cost cutting, which has affected streaming shows in the past. Instead, these shows have reached the end of their licensing agreements and Hulu has chosen not to renew them.
Streaming platforms like Netflix regularly evaluate the viewership and cost of licensing a show when determining whether or not to renew its agreement. If a particular show does not attract enough viewers, its agreement may not be renewed over time. This can occur even when the TV studio and the streaming service are under the same corporate ownership.
It is peculiar that Hulu does not prioritize promoting legal dramas such as Ally McBeal and The Practice, considering the popularity of shows like Suits and The Lincoln Lawyer on streaming platforms. Regardless, viewers can still access Ally McBeal, The Practice, The Bob Newhart Show, and 90210 on Prime Video. Additionally, Arrested Development will continue to be available for streaming on Netflix.
