Star Trek: Strange New Worlds director Chris Fisher has shared that the super serum used by Dr. Joseph M'Benga and Nurse Christine Chapel will be further explored in season 2. In the premiere episode, titled "The Broken Circle," Chapel and M'Benga find themselves taken captive by Klingons on Cajitar IV. Drawing on their experiences from the Klingon War in Star Trek: Discovery, as well as the use of a controversial hypospray, M'Benga and Chapel's enhanced abilities enable them to fend off the Klingons and ultimately be rescued by the USS Enterprise.
During an appearance on The 7th Rule podcast hosted by Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk, director Chris Fisher provided additional details about Dr. M'Benga's super drug, assuring fans that more information about this mysterious substance will be revealed in Strange New Worlds season 2.
I want the fighting to reach a whole new level, especially because there is a backstory between M'Benga and Chapel regarding their previous use of a hypospray. This backstory adds depth and will be further explored in the season. The substance they used will remain a mystery, but we will learn how they acquired knowledge about it.
Why Strange New Worlds Gave Chapel & M'Benga A Controversial Super Serum
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2's premiere introduced a super serum that took the fight sequences to a whole new level, according to Chris Fisher. This serum not only enhanced the action but also allowed actors Jess Bush and Babs Olusanmokun to showcase their real-world skills. Fisher reveals in The 7th Rule podcast that Jess is a highly physical actor, while Babs, unbeknownst to the producers, is actually one of the world's top jiu-jitsu fighters. Once this was discovered, the producers were eager to incorporate Babs' expertise on-screen. Fisher further adds that Olusanmokun and Bush were responsible for 99% of the fighting scenes in the series.
Dr. M'Benga and Nurse Chapel have surprised everyone by using a mysterious super serum, which they had previously used during the Klingon War. This revelation in the premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 was truly astonishing. Dr. M'Benga always carries the hypospray with him, fully expecting to face off against the Klingons on Cajitar IV. With the help of this unknown stimulant, Chapel and M'Benga displayed incredible strength, endurance, and the ability to withstand attacks from the formidable Klingon warriors. However, the existence of this Starfleet version of Captain America's super soldier serum will undoubtedly have consequences, which we hope Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 will explore, along with uncovering its origin. Don't forget to catch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 on Paramount+ every Thursday.
