After Microsoft's successful court case against the FTC, gamers are hopeful that the 2009 Wolfenstein Xbox 360 game will be included in the backward compatibility lineup following the completion of Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The highly anticipated deal is expected to close later this week, but it remains unclear how soon fans will witness its impact. While it is already known that Call of Duty will not be available on Xbox Game Pass until at least 2025, the finalization of the deal could potentially lead to earlier availability of classic Call of Duty games on Game Pass. This could be a significant development for the service, potentially granting access to all of Activision Blizzard's older games. Additionally, it could provide an opportunity for the underrated 2009 Wolfenstein Xbox 360 game to stage a comeback.
The 2009 Wolfenstein game, developed by Activision-owned studio Raven Software and published by Activision, was the final game released before id Software was acquired by ZeniMax Media. Due to this sequence of events, the game is currently not included in the Xbox backward compatibility program or available for re-release. However, with Microsoft's recent acquisition of ZeniMax, Activision, Raven Software, id Software, and Bethesda, there is a possibility that the game could be made playable on modern Xbox consoles.
Nevertheless, even though Microsoft has the technical capability to revive the 2009 Wolfenstein game, there is no guarantee that they will actually do so. Microsoft ceased adding games to the Xbox backward compatibility program several years ago, and it is unlikely that they will reopen it now. Additionally, while the game has its fans and is considered by some to be an underrated Xbox 360 FPS, it received mixed reviews upon its initial release and has since been overshadowed by the success of MachineGames' Wolfenstein titles. As a result, the demand for the 2009 Wolfenstein game may simply not be high enough.
However, there are additional games published by Activision Blizzard that could warrant another update to the lineup of backward compatible titles, including various titles from the original Xbox and Xbox 360 eras. The extent to which Microsoft plans to incorporate Activision Blizzard content into Xbox Game Pass remains uncertain, so details regarding that aspect will need to be postponed. Although the classic games may not materialize, fans can at least expect the eventual inclusion of modern Activision Blizzard games with native versions for Xbox One and Xbox Series X on the service.
Wolfenstein is currently accessible on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
