Actress Allison Mack has been released from prison before completing her three-year sentence for her role in the NXIVM sex cult. The 40-year-old Smallville alum was released on July 3, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website. In June 2021, Mack was sentenced to three years in jail after pleading guilty to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy charges related to NXIVM in April 2018. She had started serving her sentence in September 2021. The reason for her early release is currently undisclosed.
In April 2018, Mack's legal troubles began when she was arrested for allegedly recruiting women to a sex trafficking group led by Keith Raniere. The charges against her also included identity fraud and money laundering. According to United States Attorney Richard P. Donoghue, the victims were exploited both sexually and for their labor for the benefit of the defendants, as stated in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter.
According to court documents obtained by We in April 2018, Mack, best known for her role as Chloe Sullivan on The CW's Smallville, recruited women to NXIVM by falsely describing it as a women's empowerment group or sorority. Upon joining, members were coerced into providing the group with sensitive information such as naked photographs, assets, criminal confessions, and other damaging material, referred to as collateral.
Mack's involvement in the scandal included performing ceremonies where her slaves were branded with Raniere's initials. She would also press her hands on the chests of these slaves, instructing them to "feel the pain" and "think of their master," causing them to cry out in agony. Additionally, old tweets of Mack's resurfaced during this time, revealing her apparent attempt to recruit celebrities Emma Watson and Kelly Clarkson into NXIVM.
Upon her arrest, Mack was granted release on a $5 million bail bond and was placed under house arrest. In April 2019, she changed her initial plea of not guilty and instead pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and racketeering. This decision closely followed the guilty pleas of NXIVM co-founder Nancy Salzman and her daughter, Lauren Salzman, who had admitted to racketeering conspiracy charges a month earlier.

Raniere, at the age of 62, was handed a 120-year prison sentence in October 2020. This came after he was found guilty of seven felony charges which included sex trafficking of children, conspiracy, and conspiracy to commit forced labor. In his defense, he maintained his innocence during an interview with NBC News.
Initially, Mack was facing a maximum sentence of 17 years. However, in return for providing evidence to prosecutors and assisting with their case against Raniere, she received a more lenient sentence.
Before her sentencing, Mack initiated divorce proceedings with her wife Nicki Clyne, whom she married in 2017. In June 2021, Mack expressed her remorse to the victims of NXIVM in a statement to Us, acknowledging that she had committed serious offenses.
Mack further stated, "I wholeheartedly immersed myself in the teachings of Keith Raniere, genuinely believing that his guidance would lead me towards personal growth and enlightenment. I dedicated my loyalty, resources, and ultimately, my entire life to him. This decision was the gravest mistake and deepest regret of my life."
A memo accompanying the statement highlighted the request made by Mack's legal team for her to avoid imprisonment. As part of her sentencing in June 2021, the actress of German origin received a $20,000 fine in addition to serving a three-year prison term. She commenced serving her jail sentence ahead of schedule in September of the same year.
Allison Mack's former colleagues on Smallville have shared their experiences with NXIVM over the years. In March 2018, Kristin Kreuk disclosed that she had become a member of the organization at the age of 23, believing it to be a "self-help/personal growth course," and had left NXIVM five years ago.
However, at 40 years old, Kreuk made it clear that she was not part of the group's "inner circle" and had not recruited women as "sex slaves." She expressed her horror and disgust regarding the allegations surrounding Mack.
In May 2019, Alaina Huffman revealed that she had been invited to NXIVM meetings by Mack, but she always sensed that there was something amiss within the group. She exclusively told Us at the time that she had a gut feeling and chose to distance herself, feeling that she was not susceptible or vulnerable. Huffman revealed that she had a strong support system with her own village of friends, a stable marriage, and her children.
