Summary
A former bank robber praises Ambulance for accurately portraying the adaptive nature of robbers when interacting with bank employees and police officers.
The movie effectively illustrates the potential issues that can arise during a bank robbery, such as the malfunctioning getaway car.
Ambulance aptly portrays the covert presence of police officers outside the bank, along with their smart tactics in surveilling and capturing criminals.
Former bank robber Cain Vincent Dyer praised Michael Bay's heist action film Ambulance for its accuracy. Dyer noted the realistic portrayal of Danny and his interactions with other characters, as well as the accurate depiction of police anticipating criminal activity. In a recent video from Insider, Dyer shared his thoughts on the heist scene in Ambulance. Read his comments below:
At the bank, I assert myself in a calm manner when speaking to individual employees, giving them instructions. It shows my ability to adapt to different situations. You can clearly see the contrast between how I interact with customers and how I handle a police officer.
In that particular scene, the car isn't functioning. Ideally, you would expect a getaway vehicle to work perfectly for a bank robbery. However, sometimes things don't go as planned. Interestingly, many bank robbers choose to leave the car running or park it right in front to minimize the effort required to start it and make a quick escape.
What Happens In Ambulance's Robbery Scene?
Outside the bank, we observed undercover police officers who were actively monitoring the area. To my surprise, when I eventually surrendered, I was informed that this was standard practice. The dedicated FBI agent overseeing my case would assemble teams to stake out various banks, aiming to catch me in the act of casing or robbing. Their efforts were essentially based on conjecture, as I made sure not to leave any obvious clues for them to follow. However, this method was consistently employed when dealing with larger criminal organizations involved in multiple robberies within a concentrated area over a short period of time. While there are certainly elements of fiction and dramatic effects, the overall accuracy of this approach remains intact.
The ambulance scene is filled with excitement, particularly the moment when a bank robbery ensues due to Will's inability to afford his wife's surgery. At LA Federal, Danny assumes the role of the manager in charge and attempts to deceive police officer Zach (White) who approaches the building. However, after being discovered, Danny resorts to pulling out a gun. As the situation spirals out of control, Gyllenhaal's character undergoes a change in behavior. Amidst the chaos, he and Will take Zach hostage and make their way through the bank while their team members fall victim to the escalating circumstances.
Dyer acknowledged the potential for unforeseen complications and the presence of undercover police officers on site, posing challenges for Danny and Will in Ambulance. Once paramedic Cam Thompson loaded Zach, who had been shot by Will, onto the titular vehicle, the brothers commandeered it as their means of escape from the bank. They skillfully evaded pursuing police officers, necessitating Cam's insistence on reaching a hospital.
Dyer's personal insights on the matter are intriguing, revealing that Ambulance's portrayal of a bank heist was largely accurate. Furthermore, the film continues to deliver intense action sequences following Danny and Will's successful getaway, culminating in a conclusion where both characters endure the consequences of their actions without emerging unscathed. This commitment to realism adds depth to the movie's overall approach.
