European Union lawmakers reached a historic agreement on Friday to enact the first-ever extensive artificial intelligence legislation in the world.
The AI Act creates a regulatory structure to foster the advancement of AI technology while also tackling the potential dangers that come with its rapid development. The law prohibits harmful AI practices that pose a significant threat to the safety, well-being, and rights of individuals.
During a press conference, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola praised the law as a "balanced and human-centered approach" that is likely to set the global standard in the years ahead. The law prohibits specific AI uses, such as the unauthorized collection of biometric data for creating facial recognition databases.
The EU law represents a groundbreaking initiative, particularly in the face of increasing concerns about the potential disruptions caused by artificial intelligence.
"The #AIAct goes beyond mere regulation - it serves as a catalyst for EU startups and researchers to take the lead in the global AI competition," stated Thierry Breton, the EU Commissioner for Internal Market, on social media. "The future holds even greater promise."
