England Women: Lionesses Receive Stellar Reception Down Under Amidst World Cup Bonus Controversy

Sky Sports News reporter Gail Davis reflects on the warm reception the Lionesses received in Queensland ahead of the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand However, tensions rise as the dispute over World Cup bonus payments remains unresolved

The Lionesses received a warm welcome and were blessed with good fortune, while a traditional Gubi Gubi ceremony helped ward off negative energies. This ritual, rooted in a tribe's commitment to celebrating and preserving the land, was a fitting way to mark the arrival of the Lionesses.

The England team is fully aware of and grateful for the upcoming opportunity in Australia. However, their achievements go beyond just winning on and off the field, as they strive to pave the way for future generations. They are now taking on the Football Association, their own employer, to secure larger World Cup win bonuses.

A new FIFA rule implemented for this World Cup ensures that players will receive a fixed bonus regardless of their national team. However, the England team believes that the Football Association (FA) should also provide them with additional rewards. "I believe these issues are prevalent in women's football, not just within our team. Many teams, players, and associations have to struggle to bring about changes in the game," stated Lucy Bronze, a defender for Barcelona and England.

"It's unfortunate that women, both in sports and in general, are compelled to do so," she commented. "However, I believe it's a responsibility that numerous athletes and women assume within society and the realm of sports."

Bronze notes that the team has primarily overcome their jet lag effectively.

I'm doing well, sleeping as usual. The girls have impressively recovered from jet lag. We had training sessions yesterday and today. Although some of the girls are attempting sneaky naps, we make sure to wake them up with a smile.

This opportunity has allowed Bronze to explore and discover the wonders of Australia.

"We have been visited by kangaroos on our balcony, likely a mother with her baby. They seem to be present wherever we go.

"It's delightful to engage with nature, enjoying our time on the beach and basking in the Australian sun, embracing all that is associated with this beautiful country."

"This is an unprecedented experience for all of us. Being in a country like this, and having the opportunity to play football here, is truly something we are thoroughly enjoying."

In addition to overcoming jet lag, captain Millie Bright was able to fully participate in training after removing her unwanted knee brace. The talented central defender had been sidelined after sustaining a knee injury while playing for Chelsea against Lyon in the Champions League back in March.

The main session, witnessed by a crowd of 3000 fans, saw participation from everyone except Katie Robinson. As a precautionary measure for her ankle issue, she trained separately.

With the ongoing events in the Ashes and the intense rivalry between England and Australia, is Bronze taken aback by the exceptionally friendly reception?

"It's been pleasant. Despite the rivalry we have in numerous sports, I find myself having a strong connection with the Australians."

"We have been fortunate enough to connect and communicate with many individuals, not only today but also in the past, who have expressed their support for England as their second favorite team. We appreciate this sentiment and value their support, though it may potentially change if our teams happen to face each other in the later stages of the tournament."

"I envision a match filled with fierce competition, with numerous Australian girls showcasing their skills in England and Europe, led by the talented Sam Kerr. This alignment has the potential to create an exceptionally captivating game," Bronze commented.

Before that, however, there are numerous football matches to be played, beginning with a closed-door game against Canada on July 15. Subsequently, the England team will travel to Brisbane for their opening match of the World Cup against Haiti a week later.

Wiegman, who had the final say, delivered the official shirt numbers to the players, inherited from the esteemed Gubi Gubi elders. This gesture symbolized the transfer of invaluable spiritual principles such as courage, friendship, empathy, and resilience - qualities meticulously ingrained in this squad. Wiegman expressed her hope that the viewers relish watching us in the forthcoming weeks.
