There wasn't a dry eye at Austin's Moody Center when Lainey Wilson and other country superstars paid tribute to the late Toby Keith at the CMT Music Awards, two months after his passing.
Wilson, 31, performed alongside Brooks & Dunn, Sammy Hagar, and Lukas Nelson on Sunday, April 7. Former MLB player Roger Clemens expressed his anticipation for honoring Keith. "Hopefully, I don't get too emotional," he shared with Us on the red carpet. "We miss him dearly and it's an honor to be asked to present one of his songs, so I'm looking forward to it."
He mentioned his desire to show appreciation for the family and maintain a positive attitude throughout the evening. "Toby left us with some amazing songs. I mean, you catch my drift? There are a lot of fantastic ones, and they're enjoyable to sing along to," Clemens, aged 61, expressed. "I can nail some of them pretty well, while there are others that I struggle with, but I always give it my all."
The former athlete graced the stage to kick off the tribute. "I am privileged to be present here to honor Big Dog Daddy Toby Keith, a genuine friend, patriot, and outstanding American. Toby spent three years in Houston, on and off, while he fought against that dreadful C-word. Despite it all, he maintained his sense of humor and quick wit," Clemens shared during the event.
He shared a heartwarming story about his two younger boys playing baseball at the University of Texas, facing off against the Sooners at Toby's university in Oklahoma. Toby made a deal with them - if they hit a home run off the Oklahoma pitcher, he would join them on the dugout and sing "the eyes of Texas." True to his word, Toby sat on the dugout and sang "I've been working on the railroad" with his humorous touch.
Afterwards, Clemens brought out Brooks & Dunn to perform Keith's hit song "Should've Been a Cowboy," followed by them introducing Hagar.
Over the years, Toby and I spent a lot of time in Cabo together. We closed the Cabo Wabo down so many times that we probably can't even remember all of them. It's not easy to get kicked out of your own bar, but somehow we managed to do that.
Our routine was always the same. I would arrive early, join the band on stage, and then I'd notice a commotion at the front door. Big dog daddy and his crew would walk in, and I'd turn to the band and say, "Here we go again."

Hagar then performed Keith's song "I Love This Bar" and showed off his shirt that read "Forever a Sooner."
After Hagar, songwriters Lukas Nelson and Riley Green took the stage to honor Keith. Nelson shared, "Toby was a larger-than-life personality. I first met him when I was young, while he was working on 'Beer for My Horses' with my dad. I feel fortunate to have witnessed his talent up close."
Green said, "That guy had a talent for creating catchy hooks and singing his heart out in every song he wrote, making it seem effortless."
Next, Lainey Wilson performed a cover of Keith's "How Do Ya Like Me Now?" to pay tribute to him. Finally, Clemens came back on stage to conclude the tribute by acknowledging Keith's family and raising a toast in his honor.
Clemens expressed his gratitude, saying, "Thanks for sharing your dad with all of us." He struggled to hold back his emotions as he continued, "Thank you. Trish, we love you. Thank you for sharing your husband with the world, Trish. Thank you."
In reference to Keith's famous "Red Solo Cup" track, Clemens and many audience members raised red Solo cups. He encouraged everyone to participate, saying, "Everybody at home, raise your fist if you don’t have a Solo cup." Then, he led them in a chant, "Repeat after me: whiskey for my men and beer for my horses."
In February, it was reported that Keith had passed away at 62 years old.
A statement was posted on his social media accounts on February 6, saying, "Toby Keith passed away peacefully on the night of February 5th, surrounded by his loved ones. He faced his battle with bravery and dignity. Please give his family privacy during this difficult time."
Keith, survived by his wife Tricia Lucus and their three children, was diagnosed with stomach cancer less than a year ago.
In June 2022, the "Red Solo Cup" singer shared on Instagram that he had been battling stomach cancer since last fall. After undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery for the past 6 months, Keith expressed that he is doing well and now needs time to rest and recuperate.
He said, "I am excited to be with my family now, but I can't wait to see my fans soon."
Nearly a year later, Keith received the Country Icon Award at the first People's Choice Country Awards in September 2023. During the event, he shared an update on his health.
Keith shared with Extra that he has been doing alright, just taking things as they come. He mentioned that he has faced some challenges but feels supported by a higher power. Despite experiencing ups and downs, he is feeling much better compared to the previous year.
Keith's musical success was evident by selling over 44 million records globally and being honored in the Country Music Hall of Fame posthumously. He had a strong connection with the CMT Awards, earning 30 nominations and winning seven awards throughout his career. Additionally, Keith had the opportunity to cohost the ceremony in 2003 and 2012, where he took home three trophies, including Video of the Year for “Courtesy of The Red, White and Blue (The Angry American).”
The CMT Music Awards will further celebrate Keith’s legacy in a one-hour TV special on Thursday, April 11, that airs on CMT at 10 p.m. ET.
