Christina Chong discusses Lieutenant La'an Noonien-Singh's emotional scene towards the end of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow." La'an and a different version of Captain James T. Kirk (played by Paul Wesley) travelled back in time to 21st-century Toronto in order to protect the timeline. La'an developed feelings for James, but unfortunately, Kirk was killed by a Romulan time traveler named Sera (played by Adelaide Kane).

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Christina Chong revealed the filming process for the heart-wrenching moment when La'an privately expresses her emotions at the conclusion of Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3. Surprisingly, this was one of the first scenes filmed for the episode, and Christina effectively portrayed the intense emotional impact even before shooting the on-location scenes in Toronto, including Kirk's death. Here is her quote:

La'an Can Still Meet Lt. James T. Kirk On Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

That scene, where La'an is seen crying on her bed, was actually one of the first scenes we filmed. It took place in La'an's quarters, on the same stage where Paul and I were present. However, Paul positioned himself in a corner of the quarters and filmed his part against a wall, while I remained on the bed. This meant that I couldn't see him on the screen or in person. Despite this, we filmed our scenes simultaneously to establish some sort of emotional connection. I believe this was the first time Paul was on set, and we filmed it right at the beginning. Naturally, I felt a bit anxious because I had to figure out my emotional journey and ensure that I reached the necessary emotional state to justify the scene.

The love Captain Kirk La'an felt for the individual she tragically lost was from a reality that no longer exists, all thanks to La'an's efforts to safeguard the temporal focal point and Sera's intended target: Khan Noonien-Singh (Desmind Sivan). Surprisingly, Strange New Worlds added a twist by portraying Khan as a young boy, resulting in a significant alteration to the Star Trek timeline, with Khan's rise to power occurring decades later than in Star Trek: The Original Series' 1990s timeframe. However, the weight of saving Khan while losing her own version of James T. Kirk proved unbearable for La'an, particularly because she must keep this secret to herself.

La'an quickly confirmed that Lieutenant James T. Kirk is still alive on the USS Farragut, but he doesn't remember her because this version of Kirk never went through the same events as his alternate reality counterpart in Toronto. Unfortunately, La'an lost her James, but there is a possibility that she may come across the Prime Star Trek timeline's Lt. Jim Kirk when he joins the USS Enterprise in season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Despite her ability to control her emotions, it remains uncertain how she will react if and when she encounters her universe's James Kirk. Don't miss Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, available for streaming on Paramount+ every Thursday.
