Elizabeth Olsen, known for her portrayal of Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has expressed that she doesn't feel any longing to play the character. Nevertheless, she is open to the possibility of returning if Marvel Studios were to reach out.
After appearing in various supporting roles as Wanda, Olsen took on the character in the Disney Plus limited series called WandaVision. The show delves into Wanda's takeover of a small town, where she indulges in her desired life with Vision amidst a twisted and satirical representation of sitcoms. Subsequently, in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Olsen's character assumes the role of an antagonist, as she becomes corrupted by the Darkhold, nearly causing the destruction of multiple realities. Ultimately, she makes a sacrificial decision to obliterate the Darkhold, leaving uncertainty about her survival.
As part of Variety's Actors on Actors series, Olsen engaged in a conversation with The White Lotus actor Meghann Fahy. During their discussion, Fahy inquired if Olsen missed portraying Wanda. "No, I don't," responded Olsen. "After almost 10 years of bringing her to life, I've truly cherished the experience. The reason I don't constantly reach out to Kevin Feige with new ideas is because I'm genuinely proud of what we accomplished. 'WandaVision' presented an unexpectedly exciting opportunity." Olsen continued, "Even if I were to be informed that I'm no longer part of Marvel movies, I would still be immensely proud of the work we've done. My current focus is to explore new films and characters, shifting the spotlight away from the Marvel universe."
Olsen's potential final appearance as Scarlet Witch could be in Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Madness, but Feige hinted at her return in 2022. It remains uncertain if her character survived in Doctor Strange 2. Given the ongoing multiverse saga of Marvel Studios, any character could make an appearance in future films.
During the interview, Olsen didn't express opposition to the idea of returning, leaving room for the possibility if Feige can find a suitable project for her. Olsen has also indicated that she has ideas for Scarlet Witch's next storyline, suggesting that the right story could entice her back to the MCU even if she doesn't reach out to Feige herself.
