The altered version:
The world premiere of the revamped horror-comedy The Toxic Avenger, a remake of the 1984 cult classic, is set to take place at Austin's Fantastic Fest this week. This new version features Peter Dinklage in the lead role as the revamped Toxie. The film is directed and written by Macon Blair, known for his recent appearance in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. While the complete unveiling of Dinklage's radiation-infected appearance is yet to be revealed, we do have our initial glimpse of Elijah Wood portraying the repugnant and peculiar Fritz Garbinger.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Blair describes Wood's character as a combination of "Riff Raff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Danny DeVito Penguin."
Wood gave valuable input during discussions with Blair and the film's designers, resulting in a design that reflects a Peter Sellers-esque performance of going invisible. The intention is for the audience to forget that they are watching Elijah Wood, known for his role in Lord of the Rings, or any other previous work.
In this movie, a new villain named Garbinger makes an appearance, distinct from any character in the Tromaverse. Described as the unimpressive member of a family, contrasting his older brother portrayed by Kevin Bacon, who is portrayed as a golden figure. According to Blair, Garbinger serves as a henchman within a corrupt company.
Fritz leads a group of insane individuals known as Killer Nutz, who are not only musicians but also lethal criminals. Blair found the concept amusing, envisioning a rock and roll band with a theatrical presentation of evil similar to KISS or Alice Cooper, but in reality, they work as professional assassins. The director expressed his desire for their terrifying reputation to be genuine.
In addition to Dinklage, Wood, and Bacon, the cast includes Jacob Tremblay (The Little Mermaid), Taylour Paige (Zola), Sarah Niles (I May Destroy You), Julia Davis (Sing 2), and Julian Kostov (Netflix's Shadow and Bone). The release date has not yet been announced.
