Get ready for the long-awaited anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's Monsters as it finally has an official release date. Here's the scoop on everything you need to know.
Before the official release of the manga One Piece, Eiichiro Oda released a series of one-shots, which were later compiled into the "Wanted!" volume featuring five side stories. Among these stories is the tale of the legendary swordsman Ryuma, whose legend still captivates the land of Wano despite having lived around 400 years ago.
Sunghoo Park, known for directing Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, is directing the anime adaptation of this one-shot. He is also the founder of E&H Production, the studio behind Monsters anime, showcasing his attention to detail. The original net animation titled “Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation” was announced in July 2023.

What is the Monsters anime about?
The Monsters anime is a canon story that continues the events of Wano from 400 years ago, revealing the legend of Ryuma slaying a dragon. This adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's one-shot tells the backstory of Shimotsuki Ryuma and his legendary status. Ryuma, an ancestor of Roronoa Zoro, is introduced in the Thriller Bark arc of One Piece as the legendary swordsman from Wano who is said to have defeated a dragon. Eiichiro Oda confirms in SBS Volume 247 that the zombie character in Chapter 450 is indeed Ryuma.

Editor's P/S
As a passionate fan of Eiichiro Oda's works, I am thrilled about the upcoming release of the Monsters anime. The fact that it's an adaptation of a one-shot from Oda's early days, featuring the legendary swordsman Ryuma, adds an extra layer of excitement. The story of Ryuma slaying a dragon and his connection to Roronoa Zoro, one of the main characters in One Piece, has always intrigued me, and I can't wait to see it come to life in animated form.
The involvement of Sunghoo Park, the director behind Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, further elevates my expectations. His attention to detail and ability to create visually stunning anime adaptations give me confidence that Monsters will be a treat for the eyes. The release date of January 21, 2024, can't come soon enough, and I eagerly anticipate immersing myself in this captivating world of monsters and legendary samurai.
