Director Marc Jobst is celebrating the return of Daredevil and The Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Charlie Cox and Jon Bernthal made their debuts in Netflix's Daredevil and both have appeared in other Marvel shows. Jobst expressed his excitement about the characters' return, stating that the team behind the shows felt they had more to accomplish and praised the actors for their inspiration.
Apart from the stories it allows us to tell, which resonated with the audience, these characters are truly remarkable. The best superhero stories are not only entertaining but also hold a deeper meaning, reflecting our world and our aspirations. We wanted to continue telling these stories, exploring new aspects of the Marvel Universe that we hadn't yet touched upon. We all knew we weren't finished, there was still more to do. Working closely with these talented actors who embody these characters is truly inspiring. So, for them to have the opportunity to step into those roles once again, and for those fortunate enough to collaborate with them, I can only express my gratitude and admiration.
Will The Rest Of The Defenders Return To The MCU?
After a two-year wait following the cancelation of various shows, Marvel finally began incorporating characters from the Netflix universe in 2021. Charlie Cox reprised his role as Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home, while Vincent D'Onofrio appeared as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in Hawkeye, both as part of their deal with the streaming platform. It has been confirmed that Cox and D'Onofrio will also return for the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again, which has a massive 18-episode, two-season order. Previous reports have raised questions about the potential returns of Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones, Mike Colter's Luke Cage, and Finn Jones' Iron Fist to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some suggest that Daredevil: Born Again will set up Jones' return, as Matt Murdock (played by Cox) searches for her. Others speculate that the upcoming Echo show, also rumored to feature Cox and D'Onofrio, will explore this storyline. Ritter has expressed her interest in reprising her role, and even some of her fans believe she teased a possible return in January when she posted workout photos wearing a Daredevil shirt.
On the other hand, Colter has approached the possibility of returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with caution. He believes his time playing the role has come to an end, but recognizes that there are still more stories to be told and supports the idea of someone else taking on the role. In contrast, Finn Jones is eager to reprise his role as Iron Fist in the MCU. He hopes to prove his critics wrong following the negative reception of his show and it's likely that he will make a comeback in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 2. However, with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes causing production halts on Daredevil: Born Again, it seems unlikely that we will receive any updates on the returns of the other Defenders anytime soon.
