Dungeons & Dragons Box Office Update Spells Trouble for Honor Among Thieves 2

Despite its underwhelming performance at the box office, fans of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise are still hopeful for a potential sequel to Honor Among Thieves

.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has released its final box office numbers and unfortunately, they do not look promising for a potential sequel. The film, which is based on the popular tabletop role-playing game and directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, received positive feedback from critics. It boasts a star-studded cast including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Hugh Grant.

However, despite the positive reviews, the latest announcement from Exhibitor Relations Co. reveals that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves only managed to earn $93M domestically and a total of $207M worldwide.

The tweet above disclosed that the production cost of the movie amounted to $150 million, excluding expenses for promotions and advertising. In the realm of big-budget Hollywood movies, it is typical for marketing costs to be twice the amount spent on production. Sadly, this implies that the prospects for a sequel to Honor Among Thieves are not very promising.

Despite receiving an impressive 91% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves failed to draw in a large enough audience to the theaters. However, the high praise from critics and an audience score of 93% indicates that the movie was well-received by those who did see it. The positive reception suggests that the film may find success in other avenues beyond the traditional theater experience.

Honor Among Thieves hit digital platforms on May 2, with a physical release (4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD) set for May 30. Despite underperforming at the box office, the film has garnered strong word-of-mouth and even claimed the top spot on VOD charts in early May. While revenue figures from VOD sales are not publicly available, the film's success on the platform suggests it could perform well with the upcoming physical media release. However, the disappointing box office numbers still make it unlikely that a sequel will be greenlit anytime soon.
