An individual on board an Alaska Airlines flight from a Seattle airport to San Francisco tried to take control of the plane, according to the airline. A pilot informed air traffic controllers that a person sitting in the cockpit of flight 2059 attempted to switch off the plane's engines while in mid-air. It is not uncommon for airline pilots, including those from other airlines, to use the cockpit "jump seat" for official travel or when commuting to another airport.

The unnamed passenger, who happened to be an off-duty pilot, has been apprehended by the Port of Portland Police Department, according to a reliable source informed CNN. The aircraft departed from Seattle Paine Field International Airport but was diverted to Portland International Airport due to a verified security threat, as confirmed by the airline.

"The pilot notified Seattle-area air traffic controllers via recorded audio from LiveATC.net that we have apprehended the individual who attempted to deactivate the engines from the cockpit. Currently, he appears to be cooperative and not causing any disruptions in the cabin. However, we request immediate law enforcement assistance upon landing and parking," stated the airline in a Monday statement.

"Alaska Airlines confirmed that, in compliance with FAA procedures and under the guidance of air traffic control, the flight successfully redirected to Portland International Airport. Horizon Air, a subsidiary of Alaska Airlines, operated the flight. Law enforcement authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the incident, while the FAA has acknowledged its awareness and is offering assistance to the local authorities."

CNN has reached out to local and federal authorities for further information.
