Republic of Ireland managed to secure a 3-0 victory over Gibraltar, but it was not an easy feat. It was their enhanced performance in the second half that ultimately saved them from the mounting pressure on manager Stephen Kenny. After a disappointing loss to Greece on Friday, the team was left with zero points in Group B and an arduous journey ahead to qualify for Euro 2024 with only two matches played.
Gibraltar proved to be the ideal opponents for Kenny's team as they had been unsuccessful in all their previous qualifiers since becoming a competitive international side. However, despite Ireland's slow performance in the first half, Gibraltar was unable to break their losing streak.
After halftime, the hosts displayed significant improvement and managed to take the lead with a goal from substitute Michael Johnston. This breakthrough was followed by powerful headers from Evan Ferguson and Adam Idah, allowing Ireland to finally secure their first points in the quest to qualify for next summer's finals in Germany.
