Doctors Without Borders Reports At Least 56 Casualties in North Darfur, Sudan

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has reported a death toll of at least 56 in El Fasher, the capital of Sudan's North Darfur state, due to escalating deadly fighting between last Friday and Wednesday.

At least 56 people have died in El Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur state, due to escalating deadly fighting, as reported by Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

According to MSF, 454 casualties have been brought to the city’s South Hospital since last Friday. Out of these, 56 individuals have unfortunately lost their lives to their injuries. The organization also mentioned that the actual number of wounded and deaths could be much higher, as the ongoing intense fighting has made it difficult for many people to reach the hospital.

North Darfur was previously considered a safer area within Darfur, but the situation has changed. According to MSF, the streets now have snipers, heavy shelling is happening, and there is no safe place in the city.

The violence in North Darfur has escalated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) surrounding El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.

A report released by the Yale School of Public Health’s Humanitarian Research Lab has confirmed significant conflict-related damage in the eastern and southeastern neighborhoods of El Fasher city between 10–14 May. According to the report, there have been expanded and repeated ground fighting and bombardment by the RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in the city.

UN Deputy Special Representative for Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, expressed on Wednesday that hostilities in El Fasher have been escalating, posing a serious threat to the entire city.

On Wednesday, the United States imposed sanctions on two RSF commanders for their involvement in overseeing the paramilitary group's activities in Darfur.

According to a spokesperson from the US Department of State, the RSF military operation in El Fasher, North Darfur, has put the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians at risk.

A civil war erupted in Sudan in April 2023 between the SAF and RSF. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that over 8.8 million people have been displaced from their homes since the beginning of the war. Additionally, 24.8 million people are in urgent need of assistance.
