Fifth Doctor actor Peter Davison discusses the rejection of plans for a sequel to his Doctor Who skit, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, which was created to commemorate the show's 50th anniversary. The skit, written and directed by Davison, featured himself, along with Sixth Doctor actor Colin Baker and Seventh Doctor actor Sylvester McCoy, as they joined forces with other recognizable faces to infiltrate the filming of the 50th anniversary special, "The Day of the Doctor."
Davison, in an interview with RadioTimes, shares his thoughts on the skit and its potential sequel as Doctor Who approaches its 60th anniversary in 2023. Despite Davison's enthusiasm for the sequel he had written, it was deemed unacceptable by others due to jokes that could be considered outdated. For a comprehensive account of Davison and his wife Elizabeth Morton's recollection, refer below:
Peter Davison had an idea that he found very funny, but others deemed it utterly unacceptable. He acknowledges that times have changed and his sense of humor may not be in sync with the current trends.
Elizabeth Morton describes how the idea evolved from a small project that Peter was going to film himself to something much bigger. It grew to the point where famous actors like Ian McKellen and Peter Jackson got involved. Morton believes that trying to recreate the perfect storm that made the original Five(ish) Doctors would diminish its greatness.
What Makes The Five(Ish) Doctor Reboot A Great Celebration of Doctor Who
Davison: "I would not have wanted to undertake the task unless I believed it could match, or even surpass, the quality of the original. However, as the production progressed, it became increasingly evident that I would have to compromise on too many aspects. Therefore, I concluded that it was best to abstain from pursuing it any further – after all, the original version was flawless!"
The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot has garnered a dedicated following among Doctor Who enthusiasts. This skit gave the classic era Doctors the opportunity to play a significant role in the anniversary celebrations. Each actor delivered memorable moments, such as Davison's protest outside the BBC, Baker's family attempting to hide DVDs of his Doctor Who adventures (without much success), and McCoy boasting about his portrayal of Radagast in The Hobbit. In addition, the skit pays homage to classic Doctor Who with nods like showrunner Steven Moffat having a nightmare inspired by the Fifth Doctor's regeneration and using recycled footage from an unfinished story to explain Tom Baker's absence.
In addition, the skit includes an impressive array of appearances from notable stars associated with Doctor Who and beyond. Notably, alongside Moffat and the then-current Doctor and companion duo Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman, it featured Tenth Doctor David Tennant and Georgia Tennant, Eighth Doctor Paul McGann, and even former showrunner Russell T Davies portraying fictionalized versions of themselves. Peter Jackson and Ian McKellan also make surprise appearances filmed during The Hobbit's production, and there is a scene shared by Olivia Colman and Sean Pertwee.
While it is understandable why Davison made that decision, many Doctor Who fans may feel disappointed to learn that there won't be a new skit by the actor for the 60th anniversary. The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot stood out during Doctor Who's 50th anniversary due to its humorous celebration of the show. However, with the possibility of behind-the-scenes specials for the 60th anniversary celebrations, there is still much to look forward to in the world of this popular sci-fi series.
