Summary
Jemma Redgrave is excited to return as UNIT leader Kate Stewart for one episode in Doctor Who season 14, but she will not work alongside Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor.
Kate Stewart has been instrumental in protecting humanity from threats such as Cybermen, Zygon extremists, and Sontarans throughout the revived series. The return of Redgrave serves as a reaffirmation of Kate Stewart's significance in the current Doctor Who show, despite her absence in working alongside the new Doctor this season.
Doctor Who star Jemma Redgrave is delighted to be returning for season 14 as UNIT leader Kate Stewart, despite not sharing any scenes with Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor. Redgrave first appeared in season 7's "The Power of Three" and played a significant role in the 50th-anniversary episode, "The Day of the Doctor". As the daughter of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, a beloved companion in the classic series, Kate has valiantly protected humanity against threats like the Cybermen, Zygon extremists, and vengeful Sontarans.
Though the return of Kate Stewart in Doctor Who season 14 was confirmed during the early stages of filming, Redgrave revealed in an interview on ITV's Good Morning Britain (as reported by CBR) that her involvement in Gatwa's inaugural season would be limited to a single episode, and she wouldn't have any scenes with the new Doctor. However, she expressed her enthusiasm for working with showrunner Russell T Davies and new companion Millie Gibson on the iconic long-running sci-fi series. Kate Stewart Is A Key Part Of Modern Doctor Who
In Series 14, I had the opportunity to return for one episode, and it was an incredible experience to be welcomed back into that wonderful family. Being brought back was something I never took for granted, but it was truly amazing. The prospect of being part of Russell T. Davies' new vision is incredibly exciting. While I haven't had the chance to work with Ncuti [Gatwa] yet, I did have the pleasure of working with Millie [Gibson].Although UNIT made appearances in the early seasons of the Doctor Who revival under the direction of Davies, the Brigadier and his family were mostly absent as he was engaged in other missions. However, he did make a cameo alongside Sarah Jane Smith in the spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures. In the season 6 finale "The Wedding of River Song," the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) learned of the Brigadier's passing, which coincided with the actual death of actor Nicholas Courtney in 2011. But in the subsequent season, viewers were introduced to Kate, who collaborated with the Eleventh Doctor to thwart a mysterious invasion involving strange cubes. She carried on her father's mission of saving the Earth in the Doctor's absence.
Redgrave's return to Doctor Who solidifies her character as a key figure in the revived series. Although she won't be working alongside Gatwa in season 14, Redgrave remains passionate about her role in the universe. Additionally, her confirmation that Stewart will be working with Gibson's new companion Ruby Sunday separate from the Doctor in the Fifteenth season raises questions about the circumstances that will lead to their separation. The inclusion of scenes featuring Ruby away from the Doctor may indicate a return of Doctor-lite companion adventures in season 14.
