The setting sun feature in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Sunset Wilds track is no longer present, disappointing many fans who have been exploring the latest tracks since the release of Wave 5 of the Booster Course Pass. Although Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is an upgraded version of the Wii U's Mario Kart 8, the Switch version has continued to receive new content even years after its initial release. With 40 remade and original tracks already available through the Booster Course Pass, Wave 5 introduced a combination of nostalgic classics, Mario Kart Tour courses, and the new Squeaky Clean Sprint track. These tracks have been visually updated for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, making the absence of the setting sun in Sunset Wilds more noticeable.
Gamers have taken to social media to express their disappointment over the missing sunset on the Sunset Wilds track in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's DLC Wave 5. This desert-themed course, originally featured in Mario Kart: Super Circuit on the Game Boy Advance and later added to Mario Kart Tour, had a unique day/night cycle where the sun would set as the race progressed. However, this feature is absent in the Switch version, leaving players puzzled. Many believe that this day/night cycle set the original track apart from others in the series. While the track has improved visual quality compared to its appearance in the GBA title, the absence of the sun setting and racing at night on the final lap is missed by many. Despite the disappointment, there is a possibility that changes could be made in the future, similar to what Nintendo did with Coconut Mall, a classic course from Mario Kart Wii, after its release as part of the Wave 1 of the Booster Course Pass. In that case, the developer added motion to the parked cars at the end of the track.
Nintendo's responsiveness to the disappointment surrounding the absence of a sunset in Sunset Wilds remains uncertain. However, it is important to note that the developer is far from done in terms of providing new content for the game. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is yet to release Wave 6, the ultimate segment of the Booster Course Pass DLC. Although players may have to wait patiently for the last set of tracks, it will undoubtedly be intriguing to witness any unexpected additions that Nintendo has in store for the dedicated Mario Kart enthusiasts still engaging with the game. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe can only be played on the Nintendo Switch.
