Effortlessly explore diverse cities, planets, and star systems in Starfield using these expert tips for fast travel Traverse planets swiftly and unlock the secrets of grav jumps to reach distant star systems

How to fast travel in Starfield

The Starfield fast travel methods can be classified into two types: local planet and star system grav jumps. The mechanic becomes accessible early in the game, particularly when a mission on a planet named Kreet needs to be completed. However, additional options become available when you reach New Atlantis, the capital of Jemison in the Alpha Centauri system.

Fast travel while on a planet

To quickly travel in Starfield, simply open the menu and select the map located in the upper-left corner of the screen. The initial map view displays various points of interest on a planet or moon. Just choose a landmark, landing area, or your ship to instantly teleport to that location. It's important to note that this option is unavailable during combat, when you're carrying too much weight, or when inside another facility or area (e.g., a cave within a base).

In the image below, you can observe the six fast travel spots in New Atlantis: the docking area, commercial district, residential district, MAST district, the Lodge, and your ship. If you exit this selection group, you will be able to see other outposts as well. Additionally, you have the freedom to select any land area on the planet for quick landing, as long as it is not a water body.

How to reach other star systems via grav jumps

Another method of fast travel in Starfield involves traveling to different star systems. To do this, simply open your map and zoom out until you reach the galaxy view, which displays the star map. From there, you can select a different star system to travel to. However, keep in mind that you can only directly travel to a star system if you have already discovered the connecting path or node.

Moreover, the distance you can travel is influenced by the fuel and grav drive of your spaceship. In some cases, you may need to make multiple jumps. For more information, refer to our ship upgrades and modifications guide.

Additionally, when traveling to another star system, it is necessary to perform a grav jump. Here are a few extra tips for fast travel:

While in orbit, allocate power by adjusting the small pips to the grav drive, located in the lower-left corner of your screen.

You may need to reduce the power assigned to other systems like weapons, engines, or shields.

Allocating more power will shorten the time before the grav jump activates. For example, with +3 power, the jump will initiate after a four-second countdown.

You can perform this action even during combat. In fact, it is almost inevitable if you are attacked upon arriving at a new planet, and it is unlikely that you would be able to overcome enemy forces.

If you are prepared to quickly travel to your current mission, you can "set course" and instantly fast travel to the correct star system (or docking station if you are already on the correct planet) by pressing a single button in the pause menu. On Xbox controllers, this button is X by default.
