According to Dr. Dendy Engelman, TikTok may not always provide reliable skin advice. Dr. Engelman, a certified dermatologist who has a long-standing professional relationship with Sofia Vergara, shared her honest opinion about the popular TikTok beauty trend, known as "slugging."
“Slugging,” a skincare technique that involves applying petroleum jelly/ointment to the skin, aims to prevent moisture loss and lock in hydration, according to her. However, she does not endorse this method due to its potential to excessively block pores and trap acne-causing substances alongside excess oil and dead skin cells.
Fortunately, there are alternative ways to achieve the desired results of slugging without excessive occlusion overnight, according to Engelman. She advises implementing a comprehensive skincare routine and utilizing trustworthy products.
“Clean skin is essential for any skincare routine, so make sure to start with a double cleanse using an oil cleanser and a daily face wash like Cetaphil. To still enjoy the benefits of slugging, look for a product that contains humectants such as hyaluronic acid,” she advised.
Engelman highly recommends SkinMedica’s HA5, a cream that not only hydrates but also supports rejuvenation. This product harnesses the power of antioxidants found in Vitis flower stem cell extract and peptide complex. While it may retail for $184, there is an alternative option called the Peptide Glazing Fluid by Rhode by Hailey Bieber, which offers similar properties for only $29. Additionally, Engelman praises Cetaphil’s Deep Hydration Skin Restoring Water Gel, available for $21."
Engelman also recommends experimenting with Glo Skin Beauty's Bio-Renew EGF Cream during nighttime. This cream effectively hydrates, repairs, and combats aging signs using vegan epidermal growth factor (EGF), bio-recovery peptides, and a photo retina blend.
According to Engelman, EGF stimulates collagen and elastin production, ultimately strengthening the skin barrier and promoting a more youthful appearance (which aligns with the purpose of slugging).
She said, "This cream is suitable for all skin types as it effectively fights against signs of aging without causing irritation or blocking pores. ... I particularly recommend this product to individuals over the age of 20 who are experiencing a decrease in natural EGF and are seeking to rejuvenate their skin."
The slugging trend started on TikTok earlier this year and has remained popular throughout the summer. Influencers can be seen applying generous amounts of Vaseline to their faces before going to sleep in videos showcasing the process.
Engelman advises against trying this technique for individuals with oily or acne-prone skin as it has the potential to exacerbate breakouts. Conversely, Vaseline is a safe product that effectively moisturizes dry lips, reduces redness caused by waxing, and prevents rough skin on ankles when used appropriately.
