Sid Armour Talks Chucky Season 3
: New Details Revealed About Chucky's Third Season, Including Surprise Easter Egg and White House Halloween TeaseSid, as a devoted Chucky enthusiast, I am consistently left astounded by this show's ability to continuously surpass my expectations. There are moments when I believe they have reached the pinnacle of excellence, only to be proven wrong time and time again. How do you manage to strike a delicate balance between upholding a sense of reality and seamlessly incorporating the extraordinary and terrifying aspects while tending to the makeup for a horror series like Chucky?
Sid Armour: Despite its campy nature and focus on a killer doll, we strive to approach it with authenticity. Our goal is to create the killer makeups with precision and accuracy. The actors, on the other hand, have the power to make it either laughable or terrifying. It ultimately depends on their performance, but our team ensures it looks visually appealing.
And I must commend you for your excellent work. Now, please share any noteworthy behind-the-scenes moments or challenges that arose during the makeup creation process for this season of Chucky.
Sid Armour: In the upcoming season of Chucky, we have incorporated numerous Easter eggs throughout the show. These hidden gems are primarily for my personal amusement and to share a laugh with the audience. Jennifer, being the professional that she is, is always on board with our creative ideas. To pay homage to the murders her character has committed, we decided to adorn her nails and face with teardrop diamonds. It's a subtle detail that perhaps goes unnoticed by most, but Jennifer Tilly and I find it exceptionally cool.
This exclusive revelation not only adds to the excitement, but also provides an additional Easter egg for viewers to look out for. Now, they can have fun identifying various hidden elements and moments. While I don't want to reveal too much and spoil the surprises, I can hint at some signature makeup effects and transformations that await our audience in the upcoming season.
Sid Armour: Sure. Oh. Geez, without giving too much away.
Or, hey, give it all away. We want the news, we want the tea.
Sid Armour: You desire the tea. Uncertain of the extent to which I am permitted to disclose. Uncertain of my level of permissible disclosure.
Can you divulge any methods or resources employed to attain the ominous and unnerving appearance in Chucky season 3?
Sid Armour: Chucky is brought to life by the talented puppeteer department, led by Tony Gardner, the mastermind behind the Doll Witches. With a team of six skilled puppeteers, the production of Chucky is quite intricate and costly. Interestingly, Chucky is not just a single doll; there exists a plethora of dolls, each with unique abilities. Consequently, we make it a point to maintain a safe distance from Chucky during scenes involving excessive blood splatter. Our primary concern is to ensure that Chucky's immaculate appearance remains untarnished, as any stain could potentially incur significant expenses. Therefore, we continuously demonstrate utmost respect for this iconic doll.
Certainly! What sparked your interest in Chucky? Were you a fan of the character growing up, making this project a dream come true? Or was it more of a unexpected opportunity that you found yourself immersed in?
Sid Armour: Oh my goodness. I've always had a passion for horror and had the chance to work on Bride of Chucky when I first moved to Toronto. Years later, when I heard about the series, I felt a strong desire to be a part of it. Little did I know the immense scale and satisfaction it would bring. While I anticipated it to be enjoyable, I had no idea just how big and rewarding the experience would be.
I was completely unaware that there would be multiple seasons and the extent of the blood-filled scenes that I would be a part of. Additionally, the glamorous aspect of the show has been quite thrilling for me, given my background in runway fashion. It's truly enjoyable to transform everyone into both high-fashion icons and blood-covered characters. Overall, it's been an amazing experience for me.
Definitely. It must feel like a complete circle of events for you, starting from working on Bride of Chucky and now being involved in Chucky the series for three seasons.
In season three, which character posed the most challenging transition into makeup for you?
Sid Armour: Oh, that's intriguing. We actually have a plethora of fresh characters this season, but without a doubt, Devon Sawa stands out as a distinct individual.
I was actually curious about that since he portrayed the priest in the previous season and now he takes on the role of the president in this one. How does his appearance alter in this transition?
Sid Armour explained that the reason for the character's tan is due to being frequently on camera, which adds to his distinguished appearance. He also mentioned the distinct hairstyle of the character and emphasized his enjoyable and adaptable nature. Sid further expressed that working with him is a delightful experience.
Can you guide me through the process of collaborating with the creative team and directors of the show to ensure that the makeup complements the overall vision of Chucky season 3?
Sid Armour: I have numerous ideas, but they often suggest that we focus less on unrelated topics and concentrate more on makeup. I truly want the show to revolve around makeup, and we actively collaborate with various departments. There are numerous meetings to discuss each person's role, which I greatly enjoy because it allows me to learn about other aspects of filmmaking.
While I am confident in my own abilities and constantly exploring new, exciting things, there is always someone else who knows an interesting trick or anticipates something unexpected. We are constantly involved in different murder scenarios, making each day incredibly enjoyable. I treasure this aspect of my work.
The new season starts off in the White House, and there's an elevated level of glam in terms of makeup and aesthetics this time around. How does it differ from previous seasons in terms of style and presentation?
This season, Jennifer is definitely the most glamorous character, and we took it to an even bigger level. Additionally, we have a Halloween episode that takes place at the White House, which brings a whole new level of excitement. With the abundance of resources and people, we had the opportunity to create numerous unique characters. It was a lot of fun because Don Mancini, being a film buff, made several references to iconic scenes. For example, during our Zoom meetings, he suggested recreating the famous horse head scene from The Godfather with Jennifer Tilly.
How often do the actors on the show Chucky have the opportunity to provide input on their appearance?
Sid Armour: I am a makeup artist who focuses on character development. I believe that a character's personality plays a significant role in shaping who they become. Additionally, our actors are highly involved in this process and have their own unique perspectives. We collaborate with Don in numerous meetings to discuss the direction and portrayal of each character. Don is extremely open-minded and welcomes input from various departments, such as the recent case of the Glenn and Glenda character last season, which was a substantial undertaking. While not every viewer may fully comprehend the intricacies involved, I am fascinated by the insights actors have about their respective characters.
Do you envision the appearance of the characters as you browse through the scripts and read about them?
Sid Armour: Absolutely. In fact, these scripts are incredibly clever, amusing, and wonderfully crafted. The writers include small details, meant exclusively for the reader, within paragraphs. It has truly been a joy to read the scripts and contemplate the possibilities.
And I find myself becoming completely absorbed in the thoughts and personalities of the characters, engaging in conversations with each of the actors to explore their own interpretations. As is often the case with artists, sometimes inspiration strikes me while I'm idly seated, not actively engaged in anything, and ideas begin to flow. This process is immensely gratifying to me, as I strive for every decision I make to be rooted in an understanding of the character at hand. I must admit that I am not easily swayed or influenced by the work of others; that much I can say.
