Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 4 - "Among The Lotus Eaters." Fans of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have eagerly awaited the return of Lt. Erica Ortegas, and Melissa Navia is thrilled with how this promise of #Mortegas is fulfilled in the fourth episode of season 2. Titled "Among The Lotus Eaters," the USS Enterprise is hit by radiation from the planet Rigel VII, resulting in the crew losing their memories. Despite her amnesia, Lt. Ortegas impressively showcases her skills as the helmsman, confidently declaring, "I fly the ship!" With Erica's exceptional piloting, the Enterprise successfully navigates through a perilous asteroid belt, earning her well-deserved recognition in Strange New Worlds.
Melissa Navia On Lt. Erica Ortegas Saving The Day In Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 4
Screen Rant recently had the delightful opportunity to interview Melissa Navia, where she discussed the commendable transformation of Ortegas into a hero, the intriguing relationship between Erica and Lt. Spock (portrayed by Ethan Peck), the overwhelming fan demand to delve deeper into her character's backstory, and even dropped hints about the enigmatic ninth episode of the highly anticipated second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.Screen Rant: We caught a glimpse of Ortegas being denied participation in the expedition to Rigel VII a while back. However, now we have the privilege of witnessing the complete account of the reason behind her exclusion. Let's delve into this intriguing narrative.
Melissa Navia: Yes, indeed. I was thrilled that we were able to give fans a sneak peek of this episode on Star Trek Day. As I mentioned to the fans, our writers and showrunners took note of their feedback. It has always been our intention to explore more of Ortegas' stories. However, with such a talented ensemble cast and numerous narratives to cover, there are constraints on screen time. Rest assured, there are many more Ortega stories to come. Star Trek Day was a significant moment because fans had been requesting more Ortegas, and that's exactly what they'll get. It was truly exciting and special.
This entire episode was wonderful for me because it showcased a different side of Ortegas. We see her vulnerable, not completely in control, and having to embrace why she is exceptional at what she does and why she is the only one capable of accomplishing it. I believe this will resonate with audiences because many of us have experienced doubt and feeling inadequate for the task at hand. Ultimately, we have to discover that we are indeed capable and that we are the only ones who can make things happen.
The writers' execution of Episode 204, weaving multiple storylines together, is a true testament to their skill throughout the season and a half. It's what the fans have witnessed. This entire episode was truly enjoyable.
The plotline of Rigel VII emitting radiation and erasing everyone's memories is a classic Star Trek theme. What stood out to me about Erica's story is how her reaction to losing her memories is filled with innocence and childlike wonder. It's as if we get to witness the true essence of Erica, especially in the way she interacts with the computer. The way it all unfolded and your performance were truly admirable.
Melissa Navia pondered the question: What do you do when you forget your purpose? Surprisingly, last season, fans knew Erica primarily as the helmsman. Her identity was tied to her job as the pilot. But now she questions her place at the helm, next to this other guy. I enjoyed the opportunity to witness the interactions between Erica and Spock, as they are not frequent. It becomes evident that Erica's approach to situations doesn't align with the Vulcan way. However, this collaboration presents a unique chance for them to work together.
It's like walking through your own workplace and suddenly finding everything unfamiliar. You question the purpose of desks and elevators, feeling vulnerable and lost in what you're supposed to be doing. This innocence is disorienting, causing uncertainty about the next steps. In Erica's case, she instinctively turns towards home, seeking comfort and familiarity. Meanwhile, the ship faces dangers that threaten her and her friends.
I appreciate you mentioning Erica and Spock, as well as you and Ethan, because I truly enjoy the scenes that you all have together. Currently, Spock is struggling to manage his emotions. Therefore, when Erica gets angry with him, it's evident that Spock is affected by it, although he maintains his composure. What are your thoughts on Erica's true feelings towards Spock?
Melissa Navia: Right from the start, I have consistently voiced my belief, which fans have also noticed, that there exists a strong sense of camaraderie within the crew. Everyone regards each other as confident, capable individuals who possess exceptional skills, deserving of the Starfleet title. Undoubtedly, Erica holds Spock in high esteem just like the rest of us.
But I appreciate the sense of playfulness that arises from their differences. She has a more laid-back approach, saying, "We'll figure it out, make jokes along the way, and still accomplish our goals. We don't always have to rely on logic or the so-called 'right' way. We can think outside the box." Spock, on the other hand, embodies the opposite. However, I do believe there will be instances where they find common ground. It's almost like a sibling rivalry to me. They coexist, care for each other, but have their own unique ways of doing things.
Do you know that this episode serves as the long-awaited spotlight for the Ortegas? Fans have been eagerly asking for it, and I believe they won't be disappointed. Interestingly, despite my dedication and effort in portraying this character and shaping the storylines, I anticipate that fans might still feel that there isn't enough of Ortegas by the end of this season. Throughout the past five to six months, I have poured my heart and soul into bringing Ortegas to life, ensuring that every aspect of their presence in these episodes is fully realized.
We will delve deeper into her backstory as a soldier, and I am thrilled about it. Season 1 didn't cover enough of that aspect. This season will feature a lot more of Ortega's story, but I anticipate fans will still be clamoring for more. It's incredibly fulfilling as an actor to know that viewers want to see more of the character you portray because you consistently shine in every scene. You never fade into the background; when Ortega is given a task, you command everyone's attention, and that's why everyone desires more of your presence.
Melissa Navia: Absolutely. The credit definitely goes to the talented writers. Moreover, the character itself is absolutely fantastic. She is involved in every single event that takes place on the Enterprise.
It has been a whole year since I interviewed your fellow cast members at Comic-Con, and ever since then, there have been whispers about episode 9, which is rumored to be even more thrilling than the crossover. Is there any detail you can give us as a tease?
Melissa Navia: Let me just say that I will be spending time with my fellow cast members in the near future. And it seems like everyone has been discussing it a lot. I haven't been interviewed as much as everyone else, which is quite amusing.
If they had interviewed me as well, I doubt anyone would be talking about episode [9]... the one that's generating so much buzz. It's a surprise that's on its way, and even if you have some idea about it, you still can't fully grasp what it will be like until you actually watch it. So here's what I'll say: the upcoming episodes are a source of immense pride for me, both as an actor and a storyteller, and as a member of the Star Trek family. They will offer an experience unlike anything you've ever seen before.
