Director Stephen Gaghan Recalls Heath Ledger Dying With 'Blink' Movie Script in His Hand

Director Stephen Gaghan's plan to adapt Malcolm Gladwell's Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking into a film was halted by the untimely death of Heath Ledger in the early 2000s.

Gaghan shared on the "Developmental Hell" podcast, a spinoff of Gladwell's "Revisionist History" show, that he was forced to shelve the project after receiving a phone call in 2008 from Ledger's father, Kim Ledger, breaking the news of the actor's passing. Ledger's close friend was also present during the heartbreaking call.

Gaghan informed Gladwell that the script, along with their belongings, was found with Ledger's body, with Gaghan's phone number written on the script. Despite being in shock, someone dialed the number for reasons unknown.

On January 22, 2008, Ledger passed away at the young age of 28 due to an accidental drug overdose.

In the "Developmental Hell" episode, the duo revealed that they first collaborated to adapt Gladwell's 2005 book Blink into a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Gaghan shared that DiCaprio, now 49, played a significant role in pitching the project to studios and moving it forward. With a potential green light from Universal Studios, things were looking promising. As Gaghan worked on revising the script, he decided to make the main character younger after meeting Ledger.

Gaghan expressed, "I had met Heath Ledger and I’d gotten to be very very close with him instantly. I just had a real connection with him that was, kind of, unusual and very special to me. I got really excited, and I started seeing him as the main character. Once I started seeing that, I couldn’t unsee it."

However, the course of the project was altered by the January 2008 phone call from Ledger’s dad.

Gaghan recalled being at an airport with his wife Minnie Mortimer, when he suddenly collapsed - an experience he had never encountered before or since. His feet gave out from under him, causing him to sit down in disbelief. Despite feeling like he should not have been involved in the emotional situation unfolding before him, Gaghan found himself unable to look away. His wife looked at him, her expression etched in his memory, leaving him speechless as he listened intently to the heartbreaking story. The sadness of the moment lingered with him, even after it had passed.
