Since its launch a month ago, players of Diablo 4 have been consistently frustrated with the current itemization system. The lack of valuable sets, exciting loot, a satisfying endgame, and quality-of-life features has led many fans to feel nostalgic for Diablo 3 and its Greater Rifts. While Diablo 4 focuses more heavily on assembling a character's gear, Diablo 3's gameplay revolved around challenging players with progressively difficult Greater Rift levels. While acquiring an item set was easy in Reaper of Souls, the true essence of Diablo 3's endgame was learning how to maximize its potential and surpass personal limits.
Although shifting the emphasis of grinding towards loot rather than content isn't necessarily a negative aspect, the main issue that Diablo 4 players have with its endgame is that the desired loot they are meant to pursue is either uninspiring in terms of design or extremely difficult to obtain mathematically. Uber Uniques in Diablo 4 have an unprecedented drop rate within the genre, even when compared to standards set by Path of Exile. Furthermore, whenever their drop rate accidentally becomes viable for farming, Blizzard quickly patches it out.
However, the frustration within the community goes beyond just Uber Uniques. A player named NickBucketTV, who plays Diablo 4, pointed out that the majority of Rogue Legendaries and Uniques are not satisfying at all. There is currently a lack of balance in terms of class and attributes, causing Bows to be useless for Rogues due to the comparison of Damage to Distant Enemies and Vulnerable Damage. Affixes and Legendary Aspects are too situational, and some players are concerned that Malignant Hearts follow the same design philosophy.
One of the underlying issues contributing to this feeling of dissatisfaction is the exorbitant costs of enchanting in Diablo 4. It is much easier and more effective to turn a Rare item into a "god roll" than salvage a poorly-rolled Legendary item. The endgame excitement in Diablo 4 revolves around finding the ideal Rare item with affixes that many find uninteresting. Legendary items are often disappointing and only useful for their Aspect, provided the roll is good. Additionally, the top-tier Uniques are unattainable for most players, further fueling the community's frustration.
Despite the widespread acclaim for its campaign and the introduction of an open world to the Diablo franchise, Diablo 4 may still need some time to fully realize its true potential. While many players are currently experiencing fatigue from the repetitive gameplay, the game's live service approach guarantees ongoing support and the release of expansions for years to come. Diablo 4 can be played on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
