Fifty individuals lost their lives and many others are unaccounted for following the heavy rains and flooding in Afghanistan’s Ghor province on Friday, as reported by the Afghan Ministry of Refugees.
According to a post on X on Saturday, the Ministry disclosed that 2,000 homes were entirely wiped out while another 4,000 were partially damaged due to the recent flooding.
The ministry reported that hundreds of hectares of agricultural land, hundreds of bridges, culverts, and dams, as well as hundreds of thousands of trees - both productive and non-productive, were destroyed. Additionally, thousands of cattle were also lost.
Government spokesperson Zabihullah Mojahid expressed deep sorrow for the loss of lives of our Afghan brothers and sisters in the recent floods in Ghor province.
According to the UN, hundreds of people in Afghanistan have lost their lives due to flash flooding in recent weeks.
The heavy floods have caused extensive damage in northern Afghanistan, affecting provinces such as Ghor, Badakhshan, Baghlan, and Herat.
The Taliban recently acknowledged the devastating impact of the flooding in a statement shared by spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid last Saturday.
These flash floods are just one of many natural disasters that have hit the region in recent times. In April, unusually heavy rainfall and floods resulted in the loss of over 100 lives in Afghanistan and Pakistan, as reported by authorities. Additionally, more than 600 animals perished.
Flash floods also swept away dozens in Afghanistan in July, less than three months before thousands were killed by a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the western part of the country.

The devastation caused by the recent flooding in Afghanistan is heartbreaking. The loss of life, homes, and livelihoods is unimaginable. The floods have exacerbated the already precarious situation in the country, where poverty and conflict are rampant.
The international community must step up to provide assistance to the affected communities. This includes providing shelter, food, water, and medical care. It is also essential to support the Afghan government's efforts to rebuild infrastructure and restore livelihoods. The people of Afghanistan need our help to recover from this disaster and build a better future.
