Erickson previously told CNN Chauvins family wasnt alerted about the incident and his parents hadnt been able to reach him.

Erickson believes that the agency is withholding details not only due to medical privacy concerns, but also to prevent the story from spreading in the media. CNN has contacted the Bureau of Prisons for a response.

Chauvin was attacked on Friday afternoon at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, a medium-security facility, while serving two concurrent sentences for Floyd's murder.

The Bureau of Prisons reported that an inmate was attacked at the facility and that staff members immediately began life-saving procedures. The inmate was then transported to a hospital for medical care.

In April 2021, Chauvin was found guilty of state charges including second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. He was subsequently given a prison sentence of 22-and-a-half years. Several months later, Chauvin admitted to federal charges related to the violation of George Floyd's civil rights and was given a 21-year prison sentence.

Chauvin, a White police officer, kneeled on Floyds neck and back for over 9 minutes on May 25, 2020, following reports that Floyd may have used a counterfeit $20 bill at a Minneapolis store. Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was handcuffed and lying on the ground as he pleaded that he could not breathe.

The killing of Floyd led to widespread protests against racial injustice, both in the US and internationally, with a focus on the treatment of people of color by law enforcement, especially Black Americans.

Erickson stated that he did not know about any previous attacks on Chauvin before the incident on Friday. He mentioned that Chauvin had always been worried about his safety when entering the prison system. Erickson emphasized the need for Chauvin's legal team and family to receive assurances that a similar incident will not occur again in the future.
