Netflix and director Carl Erik Rinsch are said to be in a legal dispute after his sci-fi project, Conquest, fell through. Here's what we know about the situation so far.
Reports of Netflix's rift with Rinsch surfaced in November 2023, following a string of negative headlines surrounding the streaming service in the months prior.
In mid-2023, Netflix sparked controversy by discontinuing password sharing among its subscribers, a move that was not well-received by many. This decision raised eyebrows, especially since Netflix had previously supported password sharing publicly in 2017.
Furthermore, Netflix's content library has been the subject of both positive and negative attention in 2024 and beyond. The streaming service plans to produce fewer original movies next year, while also considering licensing titles from its rival Disney.
Netflix and Carl Rinsch explained
However, all of this is arguably overshadowed by the Carl Rinsch scandal. Rinsch, the director of the 2013 film 47 Ronin starring Keanu Reeves, had signed a deal with Netflix in 2018 to create a sci-fi series called Conquest. Unfortunately, Rinsch failed to deliver any episodes of Conquest before the production was halted in March 2021, despite Netflix investing over $55 million.
How was Netflix able to spend so much and yet receive so little in return? Well, the blame largely falls on Rinsch according to an in-depth report from The New York Times. The report, which draws on evidence from "members of the show's cast and crew, texts and emails... and court filings in a divorce case brought by [Rinsch's] wife," presents a harsh depiction of the director's behavior.
After signing his contract with Netflix, Rinsch's behavior became increasingly erratic. Reports indicate that he mistreated the Conquest crew during filming in São Paulo and went without sleep for days while shooting in Budapest. He even made unfounded accusations against his wife and Conquest producer Gabriela Rosés Bentancor, claiming they were plotting to kill him.
In addition to these claims, Rinsch shared nonsensical drawings with Netflix's former VP of original programming, Cindy Holland, and made other bizarre statements. Some have suggested that this behavior may have been influenced by potential side effects of his autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder medication, including his wife and other unnamed crew members.
Rinsch also apparently went back and forth between two versions of Conquest’s overall script. The first of these aligned with the 13-episode story he originally pitched to Netflix. The second was double this size and entailed Netflix committing to Conquest Season 1 before Season 2 was even out.
What is Carl Rinsch accused of spending Netflix’s money on?
After convincing Netflix to wire him $11 million, the director utilized the funds to both sustain and enhance the project. However, it was later uncovered that any remaining money was invested in stocks or cryptocurrency, with the latter yielding a profitable return.

Rinsch reportedly amassed nearly $27 million from his Dogecoin investments. Allegedly, he utilized this substantial sum to acquire "five Rolls-Royces, a Ferrari, a $387,630 Vacheron Constantin watch, and luxury furniture and designer apparel worth millions of dollars."
Rinsch argues that the props purchased for Conquest were bought with his rightful money. He also asserts that Netflix still owes him over $14 million for breaching their contract, a claim the streamer denies. As a result, both parties are currently in confidential arbitration proceedings.
Has Netflix commented on the Carl Rinsch scandal?
According to the New York Times, Netflix representative Thomas Cherian emphasized that the streaming giant provided comprehensive support to Rinsch, both financially and in other ways, throughout the production of Conquest.
He added that "despite considerable time and effort, it became evident that Mr. Rinsch would not fulfill the agreed-upon project, leading us to abandon the project."
In court documents submitted in July 2023, Netflix's stance on Rinsch is elaborated. In a motion filed during that month, Netflix's legal team asserted that Rinsch is not entitled to additional payment due to his alleged failure to meet several production milestones specified in his contract.
Has Carl Rinsch addressed his dispute with Netflix?
While Carl Rinsch opted not to answer any of the New York Times’ questions, the filmmaker did address the Netflix scandal on social media.
Rinsch, in a now-deleted Instagram post, revealed that he declined an interview request due to concerns about the article being inaccurate. He expressed fears that the New York Times report would suggest that he had "somehow lost my mind," but clarified that this was not the case. These sentiments align with an email he allegedly sent to Netflix, asserting that he is "of sound mind and body" and contesting the company's decision to terminate his contract.

As a Gen Z netizen, I have mixed feelings about the Netflix scandal involving filmmaker Carl Rinsch. On one hand, I am disappointed and frustrated by Rinsch's alleged behavior, which includes mistreating the Conquest crew, making unfounded accusations against his wife and producer, and mishandling Netflix's funds. It is disheartening to see a director entrusted with such a significant project allegedly engage in such unethical and unprofessional conduct.
On the other hand, I am also intrigued by the complexity of this situation and the ongoing legal battle between Rinsch and Netflix. The fact that Rinsch reportedly managed to amass a substantial sum of money through cryptocurrency investments while the production of Conquest was halted raises questions about the oversight and financial management practices at Netflix. It is concerning that the streaming service appears to have allowed Rinsch to spend such a large amount of money without proper accountability.
Overall, I believe that this scandal highlights the importance of transparency, accountability, and ethical behavior in the entertainment industry. It is crucial for production companies and streaming services to have robust systems in place to monitor and oversee their projects, ensuring that funds are used appropriately and that all parties involved are treated fairly. I hope that the ongoing legal proceedings will shed more light on this matter and that lessons will be learned to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
